The two tables present sales data on Fairtrade-branded coffee and bananas in the year 1999 and 2004 in five countries (UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium and Sweden) in Europe. The information is measured in terms of millions of euros.
Overall, the sale of Fairtrade coffee and bananas varied little among most of the five countries in the five year period apart from Switzerland and UK whose sale of the two agricultural products surpassed that of the remaining countries by a huge margin.
In the first table, coffee sale increased across the board yet with variance in degree. UK’s coffee sale increased the most from 1.5 to 20 million euros. The figure followed by that of Switzerland which recorded a double spike from 3 to 6 million euros. The coffee sale of Denmark, Belgium and Sweden on the other hand just underwent a mild increment ranging from 0.2 to 0.7 million euros.
As for the sale of bananas, Switzerland distinguishes itself from other four countries by selling the greatest amount of Fairtrade bananas. It’s sales number rose hugely from 15 to 47 million euros across the five years. Meanwhile UK and Belgium’s purchase grew only slightly from 1 to 5.5 and 0.6 to 4 million euros respectively. In contrast, sales statistics of both Sweden and Denmark represented a downward trend from 1.8 to 1 and 2 to 0.9 million euros.
