“不忘初心”一开始作为网络语走红的时候，有媒体总结了它的译法remain true to the original aspiration。后来，这句话频频出现于领导人致辞以及政府工作报告里。
今天这篇推送，灵感来自我们政府工作报告双语学习小组的小伙伴提问：
这种译法，不是不可以，在以往的政府公文中也不是没有这样翻译过。比如去年在庆祝建国70周年大会上的讲话里：
不忘初心，牢记使命。
remain true to our original aspiration and keep our mission firmly in mind.
相当于是将这两句话各自翻译了一遍。
在此之前的十九大报告上，“不忘初心”还有另一个译本：
不忘初心，方得始终。中国共产党人的初心和使命，就是为中国人民谋幸福，为中华民族谋复兴。这个初心和使命是激励中国共产党人不断前进的根本动力。
Never forget why you started, and you can accomplish your mission. The original aspiration and the mission of Chinese Communists is to seek happiness for the Chinese people and rejuvenation for the Chinese nation. This original aspiration, this mission, is what inspires Chinese Communists to advance.
相当于是边解释边翻译：不要忘记当初为什么出发（即“不忘初心”），只有这样才能完成使命（“方得始终”）。很通俗易懂了。
“不忘初心”的变体也作为励志语，频频出现。还是十九大报告中：
九十六年来，为了实现中华民族伟大复兴的历史使命，无论是弱小还是强大，无论是顺境还是逆境，我们党都初心不改、矢志不渝。
“初心不改，矢志不渝。”这八个字很浪漫，彰显的是拳拳赤子心。官方译文是这样处理的：
Over the past 96 years, to accomplish the historic mission of national rejuvenation, whether in times of weakness or strength, whether in times of adversity or smooth sailing, our Party has never forgotten its founding mission, nor wavered in its pursuit.
*waver动摇，踌躇，犹豫不定。
而在今年的政府工作报告中，“不忘初心，牢记使命”的翻译简化成了stay true to the Party's founding mission。等于是将“初心”和“使命”合二为一，“初心”即建党之初的使命 founding mission：
我们加强党风廉政建设，扎实开展“不忘初心、牢记使命”主题教育……
We worked to improve Party conduct and build a clean government, started an initiative to raise awareness of the need to stay true to the Party’s founding mission...
译无定法。与此同时，我们可以稍微留意一下“不忘”的译法：
可以保留其否定语气：never forget...
但更多时候还是反面入手，用肯定语气表达坚定的决心：stay true to, remain true to。
除了true之外，在翻译实践中提到企业机构等忠于使命，还经常用committed这个词，比如前天的推送中提到了commit动词，这里就可以用它的形容词性，remain committed to，比如2017年的主席元旦致辞：
我们要牢记为中国人民和中华民族作出贡献的前辈们，不忘初心，继续前进。
We will always cherish the memory of the forefathers who have made great contributions to the Chinese people and the Chinese nation. We will remain committed to our mission, and continue to forge ahead.
