当马奇太太看到这一切时，机智地设计了一个实验，让四个女孩充分体会玩乐的后果。Jo邀请隔壁男孩Laurie来家中做客，用心地准备晚餐，却错把糖当成了盐，做出来的冰淇淋都是酸的。最后，晚餐很失败，家里也全部乱套了，大家都筋疲力尽。
马奇太太在实验结束后，对四个女孩说了以下一番话。
Yes, I want you to see how the comfort of all depends on each doing her share faithfully. While Hannah and I did your work, you got on pretty well, though I don’t think you were very happy or amiable. So I thought, as a little lesson, I would show you what happens when everyone thinks only of herself. Don’t you feel that it is pleasanter to help one another, to have daily duties which make leisure sweet when it comes, and to bear and forbear, that home may be comfortable and lovely to us all?

Then youth will be delightful, old age will bring few regrets, and life become a beautiful success, in spite of poverty.
