    Paragraph 4

①This is hardly surprising. ②China’s shortlists are prepared by a panel of “experts” who would hardly dare pick words that clash with the party’s relentlessly upbeat line. ③But it is possible to find clues as to which characters or phrases would be truer reflections of public sentiment. ④Baidu, China’s leading search engine, recently revealed its site’s most searched-for terms in 2018 relating to domestic events. ⑤Among the hottest was “vaccine incident”. ⑥It refers to a scandal involving the injection of defective doses into possibly hundreds of thousands of children. ⑦It is conspicuously absent from this year’s official shortlist of phrases-of-the-year. ⑧Among those that did make the cut are such yawn-inducing terms as “private enterprise”, for which Mr Xi pledged his “unwavering” support in October, and “import expo”, referring to a big trade show that he attended in Shanghai in the following month.

shortlist,名词,意思为“ (工作或获奖的) 候选人名单”,“If someone is on a shortlist, for example, for a job or a prize, they are one of a small group of people who have been chosen from a larger group. The successful person is then chosen from the small group. If you've been asked for an interview you are probably on a shortlist of no more than six. 列入候选名单”,也就是获得提名“nominate”的意思,“If someone or something is shortlisted for a job or a prize, they are put on a shortlist.” He was shortlisted for the Nobel Prize for literature several times.

clash with,意思为“(因信仰、观点或质量不同而) 产生分歧”,“Beliefs, ideas, or qualities that clash witheach other are very different from each other and therefore are opposed. Don't make any policy decisions which clash with official company thinking.

upbeat,形容词,意思为“乐观的;积极向上的”,“positive and making you feel that good things will happen”,反义词是“downbeat”。 I’ve been collecting ways to help people feel good and stay upbeat day in, day out.

sentiment,名词,意思为“情绪”,“A sentimentthat people have is an attitude which is based on their thoughts and feelings. Public sentiment rapidly turned anti-American.

“If you describe a feeling or attitude as unwavering, you mean that it is strong and firm and does not weaken.” She has been encouraged by the unwavering support of her family.

    searched-for,搜索,一般会用“the most searched-for”表示搜索次数最多的,例如,the most searched-for name/item。

    phrases-of-the-year,年度短语,这一年最hot最in最popular的短语,还有word-of-the-year,年度关键词;person-of-the-year,年度风云人物。
