This haunting head of Jeremy Bentham is the greatest evidence for rationalism and utilitarianism though it's overwhelmingly bloodcurdling. Bentham, a philosopher, jurist, social reformer, advocated many new notions at that time —— general election, homosexual legislation, women's equal right for schooling and firstly brought up the innovative word "international" in early modern time, just like "philosophy" by Pythagoras in Greek ear.
Bentham was born in London in 1748, a profound Aquarium and so gifted a genius boy that he got his bachelor degree at 15 and master three years later. He kept single for all his life and probably was a gay, I think.
Though utilitarianism seeded from more ancient Greek philosopher like Epicurus and others, Bentham afterwords was firmly consider the proper initiative for utilitarianism, as claimed that utility as the sum of all pleasure that results from an action, minus the suffering of anyone involved in the action. Utilitarianism is a version of consequentialism, which states that the consequences of any action are the only standard of right and wrong. Unlike other forms of consequentialism, such as egoism and altruism, utilitarianism considers the interests of all beings equally.
Meanwhile in his book An Introduction to Morals and Legislation, Bentham provided an systematic interpretation for utilitarianism, that the aim of society is to build the rationality and legislation to take the great responsibility for people's happiness and on the hand it admits the normal bitterness of life and work which is largely the foundation of all social systems.
Bentham always wanted to go to the US and finally 180 years after his death, he made this dream come true.
