These days people who do manual work often receive far more money than people
who work in offices. The so-called 'white-collar workers' are those who work in offices, dressed in a collar and tie. It is not uncommon to hear that a great many people are
often willing to sacrifice higher pay for the privilege of becoming white-collar workers. A typical example concerned Alfred Bloggs who worked as a dustman for the Ellesmere Corporation.

When he got married, Alf was afraid of mentioning his job to his wife. His wife was
dimly aware that he worked for the Corporation. Every morning, he would wear a smart black suit to go to work. During the day, he would work dressed in overalls. At night he would wear the suit again to return home after having taken a shower. The only other
people who knew the secret were Alf's fellow dustmen. The secret had been concealed from Alf's wife for over two years. And what is more, Alf's wife will not have had the
opportunity to uncover the secret for Alf has just found another job. He will wear a suit
to go to work. Although he will be earning only half as much as he used to, Alf feels
that his rise in status is well worth the loss of money. Henceforth he will appear in a suit
the whole day and be referred to as 'Mr. Bloggs', not 'Alf'.
