Across Australia, Aboriginal people are around 15 times more likely to be imprisoned than non-Aboriginal people.
The reasons they are jailed are complex. It is incorrect that it’s just because of poverty. It’s incorrect that they “commit more serious crimes”. It is incorrect that racism plays no part.
Aboriginal people have lost so much: their land, their children (which is still happening), their sacred places, their wages and, in the process, their health.
Combine all this trauma with Australia’s tendency to have a ‘law and order’ policing attitude and some racist cops, and you understand why we have an Aboriginal prison crisis.
Aboriginal people are jailed for trivial offences: swearing, driving unlicensed, unpaid fines, disorderly conduct – rarely a non-Aboriginal person would be jailed for this.
And police select Aboriginal people. According to Criminologist Chris Cunneen, higher imprisonment rates are not reflective of higher crime rates but harsher sentencing, bail laws, and a move away from alternative sentencing measures.
