under, below, beneath, underneath在使用上的区别

1.在三维空间上，当表示一个物体（在垂直方向上）在另一个物体下面时，要用under，如:

The ball is under the table.球在桌子下面。

I guess your letter is under that book.我猜你的信应该在那本书下面。

2. underneath与 under 都表示在空间位置上某物的下方，但 underneath 一般强调处在下方的物体被覆盖或隐藏，如：

We found it underneath the sofa.我们在沙发下边找到它。

There are a lot of dust underneath the carpet.地毯下面有许多灰尘。

beneath可以表示 underneath 的相同意思，但该词是更加正式的文学用语。

3. below用于表示低于某一参照高度、平面、标准等。
