Xianfeng decade (1860) British and French allied forces captured Beijing, occupying the yuanmingyuan. The Chinese defenders were outnumbered, and wen feng, the chief minister of the yuanmingyuan, threw himself into the fuhai. British army chief erkin, with the support of the British prime minister, palmerston, ordered the destruction of the Summer Palace. 3500 troops into the old Summer Palace, set fire to the old Summer Palace, after three days without out the fire, the old Summer Palace and near qingyi garden, jing Ming garden, providence, chang spring park and haidian town were burnt ruins, AnYou palace, nearly 300 eunuchs, ladies, craftsman by the flames. The world's famous garden was reduced to ruins. [1] the fire lasted three days and three nights and became a rare atrocity in the history of world civilization.
Yuanmingyuan relics looted the number of rough statistics, about 1.5 million pieces, from the Chinese pre-qin period bronze ritual vessels, down to the tang, song, yuan, Ming and qing dynasties celebrity calligraphy and painting and all kinds of treasures. There are only existing architectural sites and a park of yuanmingyuan ruins.
My comments on it :
There is no doubt that the burning of the imperial palace is one of the most abominable actions of culture destroying.
As the famous french writer Yu Guo says one day two robbers broke into the xia palace ,one robbed,another one burned. Then they happily went to Europe.
The destroying of the imperial is not only the witness of western invadors' brutal act,but also tells us "Falling behind will be beaten"
We shall not forget national humiliation.And it was their existence that enables us to forge ahead .we have reasons to believe with our concerted effort,Our motherland will be more prosperous and strong.
