Firstly, it's of course the physical setting and appearance. Every apparel she wore was designed to reflect her exact mental state and emotional struggle. That coupled with Ana Taylor's wild eyes makes the heroine the favoriate of many watchers.
A second reason is the theme. An unlikely story about how an orphan rose to become a chess genius, reaping fame and reputation. Her character was rid of all the stereotypes of submissive and gentle women, and her emotional independence from all males also makes the drama popular.
But the most important reason, is that it creates such a functional escapism. So much so that people can found some comfort in their mundane and boresome life.
