Hong Kong Culture Is Influenced by Korea and Japan: Is It a Fine Sign?
Hello friends! Welcome back to Culture in HK! Have you ever noticed that our culture has been influenced by Japan and Korea to a certain degree? Have you ever seen Hong Kongers wearing Japanese and Korean traditional clothes? Have you ever heard Hong Kong people discussing Japanses manga or Korean stars? You have no choice but to admit that Hong Kong popular culture has been influenced by the two countries above indeed. But how? And why? Is it harmful to Hong Kong culture, or even worse, to Chinese culture? No worries, I am going to answer these questions one by one.
First things first, how could Japan and Korea affect Hong Kong culture? In fact, it’s not difficult for Hong Kongers to encounter Japanese and Korean culture on the Internet, especially YouTube, where people all around the world would like to post something on, and there’s no need to mention how hot mangas and K-pop are; there are truly a lot of HK fans. Additionally, since Japan and Korea are not far away from China, while Hong Kong is a city with a global outlook, many citizens in Hong Kong may have one or two Japanese or Korean friends. Due to the aforementioned reasons, Hong Kong people could easily cantact with Japanese and Korean culture.
Secondly, why are there so many Hong Kong people attracted by the culture? From my view, China, Japan and Korea are all Asian countries, so Chinese people would probably be addicted to what Japanese and Korean are favored of. It makes sense that people in the same region haver a similar taste, doesn’t it?
Last but not least, is our culture being influenced a good phenomenon? Actually, there do exit many HK bloggers sharing their concern of seeing HKers wearing Japanese Hefu and shouting out Japanese lyrics and noticing some K-pop stars such as BlackPink seem to be more popular than local stars in Hong Kong among citizens. Is our culture being forgotten? I don’t think so. I regard that the culture trend of the world is to mix while keeping their origin. Culture is not a dead history; it is still developing while people are getting know about them. When different cultures blend with each other, they collide and produce splendid sparks, and that’s why I think cultures are charming. To conclude, Hong Kong culture being influenced isn’t a dangerous sign, it’s a necessary, reasonable and desirable process when people from various culture background communicate with others.
