今天的内容还挺有意思的,跟嘴有关,内容很简单,可以作为平时的短语积累。

正式进入今天的主题:mouth !

"Now, the VOA Special English program WORDS AND THEIR STORIES.

People use their mouths for many things.

They eat, talk, shout and sing.

They smile and they kiss.

In the English language, there are many expressions using the word mouth.

But some of them are not so nice."

我们用嘴来干嘛?对我来说,我的嘴不是在说话,就是在吃东西,总也没有闲的时候~~

“For example, if you say bad things about a person, the person might protest and say "Do not bad mouth me."”

for example表示“例如,比如”,同样可以用来举例的还有such as,甚至是简单的一个like就可以表示同样的意思,我们一起来看看他们的用法有没有不同的地方:

for example作“例如”讲时,一般只以同类事物或人中的“一个”为例,作插入语,用逗号隔开,可置于句首、句中或句末。

For example,air is invisible. 例如,空气是看不见的。

He,for example,is a good student. 例如,他就是个好学生。

such as也作为“例如”讲,用来列举同类人或事物中的几个例子。

Some of the European languages come from Latin, such as French,Italian and Spanish.

有些欧洲语言来源于拉丁语,例如,法语、意大利语和西班牙语。

like也常用来表示举例,可与such as互换。但such as用于举例可以分开使用,此时不可与like互换。

使用such as来举例子,只能举出其中的一部分,一般不能全部举出。若全部举出,要改用namely(意为“即”)。

He knows four languages, namely Chinese,English,Russian and French.

他精通四门语言,即汉语、英语、俄语和法语。

另外,such as一般不宜与and so on连用。

Do not bad mouth me.表示“你不要说我坏话”

“Sometimes, people say something to a friend or family member that they later regret because it hurts that person's feelings。

Or they tell the person something they were not supposed to tell.”

sometimes表示“有时”,我们也可以用at times这个短语表示同样的意思

有些词或者词组跟它长得非常像,我们一起来区分下:

some times是名词词组,意为“几次,几倍”

some time是名词词组,意为“一段时间”

sometime意为“某个时候”,可用于将来或过去来。

“The speaker might say: "I really put my foot in my mouth this time."”

put my foot in my mouth 表示“说错话;多嘴”

“If this should happen, the speaker might feel down in the mouth.”

down in the mouth表示“愁眉苦脸;垂头丧气;情绪低落”

“In other words, he might feel sad for saying the wrong thing.”

in other words 表示“换句话说”

Another situation is when someone falsely claims another person said something.

The other person might protest: "I did not say that.

Do not put words in my mouth."

put words in someone's mouth表示“硬说某人说过某些话或发表见解”

“Information is often spread through word of mouth.”

word of mouth表示“口碑;口耳相传;口碑营销;口头传述”

This is general communication between people, like friends talking to each other.

"How did you hear about that new movie?" someone might ask.

"Oh, by word of mouth?"

by word of mouth表示“口头地”

A more official way of getting information is through a company or government mouthpiece.

government mouthpiece表示“政府的喉舌”,什么叫作政府的喉舌?我们接着往下看~

This is an official spokesperson.Government-run media could also be called a mouthpiece.

official spokesperson表示“官方发言人”

Sometimes when one person is speaking, he says the same thing that his friend was going to say.

When this happens, the friend might say: "You took the words right out of my mouth!"

take the words right out of one's mouth表示“说出某人想说的话;不谋而合”

Sometimes a person has a bad or unpleasant experience with another person.

He might say that experience "left a bad taste in my mouth."

leave a bad taste in someone's mouth表示“留下坏印象”

Or the person might have had a very frightening experience, like being chased by an angry dog.

He might say: "I had my heart in my mouth."

had one's heart in one's mouth表示“提心吊胆”,这种感觉大概就是我们平时说的“心跳到嗓子眼了”吧

Some people have lots of money because they were born into a very rich family.

There is an expression for this, too.

You might say such a person, "was born with a silver spoon in his mouth."

be born with a silver spoon in one's mouth表示“含着金钥匙出生”

This rich person is the opposite of a person who lives from hand to mouth.

This person is very poor and only has enough money for the most important things in life, like food.

from hand to mouth表示“糊口度日;仅以糊口;朝夕相保;度日维艰”

Parents might sometimes withhold sweet food from a child as a form of punishment for saying bad things.

withhold ... from...表示"使...不让;阻止“

For example, if a child says things she should not say to her parents, she might be described as a mouthy child.

mouthy表示”说大话“

”The parents might even tell the child to stop mouthing off.“

mouth off表示”顶嘴“

说真的,我没有见过不顶嘴的孩子~~~

But enough of all this talk.

I have been running my mouth long enough.

run one's mouth表示”说太多“

今天的内容出奇地简单呐,听力和笔记完成得都很顺利,奖励自己一颗糖!

昨天认真想了一下,为什么要去让身边的人知道我在练习听力还要不断补充笔记,其实啊,我相信自己在做一件事的时候被别人知道有一种力量,这个力量会无形中鞭策我要做到更好,要越来越好!

会越来越好的~~
