    Yesterday I watched the new movie, Jurassic World. Other than the movie being a great film, there was one message that really stood out to me. They said at the end of the film, that humans must act responsibly with their power. That power is intelligence. In the movie, the humans created a new species of dinosaur, called the Indoraptor (spoiler alert). It was a vicious predator made to help the military. But it escaped and wreaked havoc. It was more powerful, agile and smart than a human. What I'm trying to say is that genetic modification has limitless power and this movie displayed the effects of genetic modification, used in a foolish, dangerous way.

    Let's start with the question, what is genetic modification?  Genetic modification is the manipulation of an organism's genes, utilising biotechnology. By doing this we create entities that share DNA traits of its two origin sources. For example, the Liger, a cross between the tiger and the lion. The Liger has the combined senses of the tiger and the lion. If you have always dreamed of seeing a tiger that is yellow, then genetic modification has just solved all your problems. Just kidding. The Liger is one of the more simple results of genetic modification. Scientists are creating extremely advanced DNA infrastructure for new animals to roam this world.

    Genetic modification is not something new. Scientists have already created thousands of genetically modified foods, flora and fauna. In our daily lives, we encounter and use many genetically modified things. Such as the fruits we eat and the products we buy. Scientists modify these things to attract buyers and for aesthetic appeal. Genetic modification is not just used for scams, they use this technology to help people worldwide who are starving in poverty. Genetically modified food (GMO) can grow extremely quickly, therefore they are consumable at earlier stages than organic foods. They are also used for improving the nourishing vitamins of fruits and veggies.

    Now you see the unbound power of genetic modification. You can literally create a new life form using the power of biotechnology. But there are limitations. As shown in the movie genetic modification was used for an unwise purpose. Though we may not be seeing dinosaurs revived, we still have to be careful about what we do with this power. Say if a vegetable was genetically modified, but there was an accident in the DNA strands and it poisoned the entire country. That would be bad news, but things like that are only minor compared to genetically modified animals that could wipe out fields of crops within seconds, animals that could drain all the water in the world. This may be fantasy thinking, but in the future anything is possible.

    So remember, even though we can't have any contributions to the work of genetic modification, we still have to keep up to date in the world of genetic modification.
