Chapter 1 - Chapter 8 is the basic foundation of this book. It gives us a sense about each character' personality. Aibileen is a very kind lady and she takes care of all babies in each white family as her own. Minny is the funny one ,and she likes to back talk every white lady she is serving. Skeeter is very educated ,and she has passion and ambition about her future.
When I finished chapter 8, I don't have a favorite character yet. But I already take a guess that Aibileen will play an indispensable role in this book. So I would ask myself if I'm in Aibileen's shoes, what would I do when Hilly was talking about building a toilet in the yard. What would I do if I saw Leefort was treating her baby so bad? What would I do if I have to take the toilet outside and hear people saying my people are sick, carrying diseases and viruses? I will definitely not endure this kind of attitude.
So this brings new thoughts to me. What happened in the past decades led to my responses which are so different from Aibileen. Even though in our daily life ,we can not make sure everyone are equal ,because still there are classes ,and there are the rich and the poor ,there are divisions. At least , equality is the core of modern society ,as we identify. People can not say something as awful as Hilly said or did without being criticized. Respects we take as granted today is not coming out for free. People did fight for them ,and people even died for them.
My first thought on Day 1 or 2 was Aibileen was too soft. And then I reflected myself ,if I am in a country filled with stereotypes, threats, silent or dreadful lines between classes, would I speak up? I don't think so ,if I think I would be put in prison or die, I would not do that. Once I realize this, every time when I want to criticize the character ,I will ask myself ,what would you do if you are in their shoes? I think this is a good question I should ask myself once a while, even when I am not reading .
