We may not speak the same language as our pets, but facial expressions often help us understand how an animal is feeling.

And cats may be trying to tell us more with their faces than previously thought —according to a new study, they have as many as 276 different facial expressions.

In the study, published in Behavioral Processes, two scientists from the University of California, Los Angeles, looked at nearly 200 minutes of videos showing cat interactions.

The videos were taken by Lauren Scott, one of the researchers, between August 2021 and June 2022, at a cat cafe in Los Angeles with 53 domesticated cats.

Scott then studied the videos with co-researcher Brittany Florkiewicz using a special coding system, focusing on the cats' facial movements and expressions.

The researchers found that cats have at least 26 unique facial movements, which include things like opening their mouths, blinking and more.

By comparison, humans have about 44 unique facial movements —although the total number of facial expressions we can make is still being researched.

In cats, however, Scott and Florkiewicz found 276 different facial expressions, each one made up of about four different facial movements. They also said that 45% of them were friendly expressions and 37% were aggressive.

The researchers said domesticated cats are usually more sociable than wild ones —and domesticated cats may have gotten some facial expressions from humans in their 10,000-year history of living with us.
