Love

1 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.

3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part,

10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears.

11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.

12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

该段是在大学《中西文化比较》课程上读的,以下是当时的感想发言:

After reading the love chapter in the Bible, our group members were fully touched by the scripture, but also we came up a question: can there be no love in this world?

In the Bible, when god created man, at the same time it endowed the world with this special feature--love. And god has created all of these things out of love.

Now let’ s just leave aside the Bible. In the world of science, love is also one of the most fundamental elements that make up the world.

In nature, from the bacteria suffering oppression in the deep, to the eagle flying high in the sky, we are able to find examples about how two individuals are attracted and connected to each other. They form a family, a small group of the two. Then new life will come, and parents will work together for its growth, and that guarantee the continuation of the world.

Then comes mutual help among the partners, the loyalty of the people to the leaders in the ethnic groups, and the protection of the leaders to their people, all of which are love.

It is even more so in the human society. Perhaps in China, our love is more based on the blood relationship in the family, while in the place of Christianity, people tend to believe in universal love. But one thing never changes: love is indispensable.

So we think the chapter of the Bible is very inspiring. It tells how important love is and how we love. It has transcended the category of religion, and it is the doctrine of life that every one of us, as long as it is part of the world, should follow. Only in this way can we achieve perpetual life and the world will be more and more beautiful.

That’ s all we want to share. Thank you for listening.
