This year's Oscar Winners a sign of resilience in U.S. ahead of '20 vote

1980年代末期的电影「Do the Right Thing」是以美国纽约的黑人地区为故事背景的。里面出场的黑人男性，两手上都挂着大大的装饰品，右手上可以看到文字LOVE(爱)，左手上能看到HATE(恨)。
他说，“我的右手和左右一直都在互相搏斗”。但是每次都是右手最终获胜。但是电影里面的情节却与此相反。当地的黑人和意大利裔的移民互相仇恨最终演化成刀枪相对，白人警官介入最终导致了悲剧的发生。
电影的导演是Spike Lee，他通过各种各样的作品直面了美国社会的人种差别问题。24号，他凭借描述崇尚白人至上主义团体的作品《BlacKkKlansman》获得了奥斯卡奖。
在获奖感言中他再次提到过去的那部电影，并且呼吁美国社会，在即将到来的美国总统大选中，要做正确的事情(Do the Right Thing)。表明了他对于特朗普总统煽动美国国内民族对立的不满。
今年的奥斯卡奖典礼上黑人和移民的存在感非常强。获得最佳作品奖的《绿皮书》讲的是黑人钢琴家在当时人种差别还很强的美国南部地区旅行的故事。最佳主演奖则颁给了《波西米亚狂想曲》的主演埃及裔美国人Rami Malek。这样的结果放在过去被批评为偏向白人的奥斯卡奖来说，是非常大的变化。
这让我想起一个英文单词Resilience. 可以被翻译成恢复，反弹，愈合等等意思。隔离和断裂在美国社会形成的伤痕不可谓不大不可谓不深。但是，即使这样也能慢慢愈合慢慢恢复的，也正是美国社会。

１９８０年代末の映画「ドゥ・ザ・ライト・シング」は、米ニューヨークの黒人地区が舞台だ。両手の拳に大きなアクセサリーを付けた黒人男性が出てくる。右手にはLOVE（愛）、左手にはHATE（憎しみ）の文字が見える。
彼は言う。「右手と左手はいつも闘っている」。そして最後に「愛」の右手が勝つのだと。しかし映画のストーリーは逆に進む。黒人とイタリア系移民が憎しみあって乱闘になり、白人の警官が介入したことで悲劇が起きる。
監督したのはスパイク・リー氏。多くの作品を通じ、人種差別に向き合って来た黒人監督である。２４日、白人至上主義団体を扱った「ブラック・クランズマン」でアカデミー賞の脚光賞に選ばれた。
受賞挨拶で、かつての映画の題名に重ねながら「正しいことをしよう」と訴えた。次の米大統領選では歴史の正しい方向に踏み込もうと。人種的な対立をあおるトランプ大統領への反感をあらわにした。
今年の授賞式で際だったのは黒人と移民の存在感だ。作品賞の「グリーンブック」では、黒人のピアニストが差別の根強い時代の南部を旅する。主演男優賞は「ボヘミアン・ラプソディ」の主役だったエジプト系米国人に送られた。受賞が白人に偏っていると批判された過去を考えると、大きな変化である。
レジリエンスという英語を思い起こす。はね返り、弾力、回復力などと訳される。分断の傷は深く大きい。しかし、それをはね返す動きもあるのが、米国という社会である。

The 1989 U.S. film "DO the Right Thing" is set in a predominantly black neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York.
An African-American youth appears, wearing a pair of huge knuckle rings--the one on his right-hand says LOVE, and one the left, HATE.
He says that the right hand and the left hand are "ALways fighting," but that the right(LOVE) ultimately wins.
But that is not how the plot goes.
Violence erupts when racial tensions between the neighborhood's Italians and blacks come to a head, leading to a tragedy when white police officers intervene.
Spike Lee, an African-American who produced, wrote and directed this film, has been addressing race relations for decades in many of his works.
On Feb. 24, Lee won his first competitive Academy Award in the Best Adapted Screenplay Category for "BlacKkKlansman," a drama about white supremacism.
In his acceptance speech, Lee brought up the title of his 1989 film and called for Americans to "Do the right thing" in the 2020 presidential election.
"Let's all mobilize. Let's all be on the right side of history," he said, making no bones about his disgust with president Donald Trump for continuing to fan racial polarization.
This year's Oscars highlighted the presence of African-American and immigrants.
The Best Picture winner, "Green Book," is about a black pianist's tour in the Deep South during the segregation era.
Best Actor went to Rami Malek, a first-generation Egyptian-American, who starred in "Bohemian Rhapsody."
The results represented a major change from the much-criticized "white-dominated" Oscars of the past.
This made me think of the English word "resilience." American society has been badly scarred by internal rifts. But it is also proving itself capable of rebounding.
