I am sorry for my late response. I am afraid I can only give a very brief reply because I will make some preparation for a party in this evening.
Yes, there is always some subtle motives, usually subconsciously, when we do something. and I agree with you that most of our behaviors are only to meet our psychological needs, to fill our inner emptiness, insufficiency, to fulfill ourselves...
To observe ourselves is to be aware of our true motives under the covering of some superficial reasons, explanations, etc. Once we begin to know a little bit of the motives , it is very easy for us to fall into a duality: identification/justification, and condemnation/escape/suppression. It seems to me that your so-called intentional filling the inner vanity is very close to justification, which means that your inner vanity has excellent and persuasive reasons to continue, so I must meet it endlessly.
Just observe your mind carefully, see if that is what is happening. If you find out that truth, it is almost your immediate action to condemn the inner vanity and make your mind to fight against it. Unfortunately that will strengthen the vanity, it is not difficult to understand.
K told us that either justification and condemnation is correct, because they are all efforts, activities(you-wei). Just keep you mind in passive(Wu-wei) alertness, awareness, observation without justification, without condemnation, without a target to fight against... maybe something subtle will happen spontaneously and the inner vanity will unfold by itself.

Man has built in himself images as a fence of security - religious, political, personal. These manifest as symbols, ideas, beliefs. The burden of these images dominates man's thinking, his relationships, and his daily life. These images are the causes of our problems for they divide man from man.
