A great writer not only offers us a good story but grants us jewels of thoughts and wisdom as well. The amount of the latter distinguishes a good writer from a mediocre one. Maugham belongs certainly to the latter. A close reading of The Moon and Sixpence produces a harvest of quotes. Here are some of them and my reflections on them.
“I don’t think of the past. The only thing that matters is the everlasting present.”
Comment: How philosophical and true the saying is. The memory of past mistakes and failures is one of the major two reasons that make people miserable. The other is worry about the future. Only the present is the most precious gift. Enjoy it and make good use of it. Only by doing so, will you have permanent satisfaction.
“…men for their soul’s good to do each day two things they disliked: it was a wise man, and it is a precept that I have followed scrupulously”
Comment: Let alone Maugham, everyone fears doing something. Whatever the fears are and the feared things are, as long as people challenge themselves to do two scary things every day. They are gradually out of their comfort zone, becoming bolder and more courageous. Their lives' range would be expanded constantly and capabilities enhanced.
