这3章,故事朝着不同的方向发展。接受审判时,Mariam镇定自若,坦诚自己的罪行。面对法官的质问,她只说了一句 "But, if I hadn't, he would have killed her. He was strangling her."
She was leaving it as a friend, a companion, a guardian. A mother. A person of consequence at last. No. It was not so bad, Mariam thought, that she should die this way. Not so bad. This was a legitimate end to a life of illegitimate beginnings.

Summary
Mariam is arrested and sent to prison, where she becomes a kind of celebrity among her cellmates for her defense against her brutal husband. In a less than fifteen-minute trial, Mariam frankly admits her guilt and is sentenced to death. Taken to the execution ground, Mariam pictures thousands of eyes bearing down on her, but she blinds herself to them all and keeps self-possessed and calm. What she feels is not regret but a sensation of abundant peace she has longs for.
As they have hoped, Tariq, Laila and their children finally come to Murree. Tariq and Laila marry there and seem to begin with their new life as husband and wife. Even though Mariam enjoys the serene life here, She still has to deal with some hardship. Tariq has headache and she has to lie to Zalmai, who always asks her where his dad is. Besides, Aziza often wakes up shrieking from her nightmares and Laila herself always dreams of being back in Kabul and of Mariam, making Laila shaken and devastating every time.
The September terrorist attack allows America to launch war towards the Taliban in Afghanistan. Tariq believes the war may end the Taliban's control over Kabul and tries to persuade Laila to go back home. But Laila can not face a war-scarred Kabul and her endless suffering the war brought to her.
