Mary and her husband Dimitri lived in the tiny village of Perachora in southern Greece. One of Mary's prize possessions was a little white lamb which her husband had given her. She kept it tied to a tree in a field during the day and went to fetch it every evening. One evening, however, the lamb was missing. The rope had been cut, so it was obvious that the lamb had been stolen.
When Dimitri came in from the fields, his wife told him what had happened. Dimitri at once set out to find the thief. He knew it would not prove difficult in such a small village. After telling several of his friends about the theft, Dimitri found out that his neighbour, Aleko, had suddenly acquired a new lamb. Dimitri immediately went to Aleko's house and angrily accused him of stealing the lamb. He told him he had better return it or he would call the police. Aleko denied taking it and led Dimitri into his backyard. It was true that he had just bought a lamb, he explained, but his lamb was black. Ashamed of having acted so rashly, Dimitri apologized to Aleko for having accused him. While they were talking it began to rain and Dimitri stayed in Aleko's house until the rain stopped. When he went outside half an hour later, he was astonished to find that the little black lamb was almost white. Its wool, which had been dyed black, had been washed clean by the rain!

She kept it tied to a tree…①keep sth. done:是keep的宾语后面加过去分词,表示“使……处于某种状态”;②tie /taɪ /: to fasten things together or hold them in a particular position using a piece of string, rope etc 〔用线、绳索等〕系,扎,拴,捆,搭配:tie...to... Tie this label to your suitcase.
【词语辨析】fetch&bring,其中①fetch:to go and get something or someone and bring them back(去)拿来;(去)请来;(去)找来,指去某处去拿某物,如:Would you mind going to fetch the kids from school? 你去接孩子们放学好吗?②to take something or someone with you to the place where you are now, or to the place you are talking about 带来;拿来;领来,如:Did you bring an umbrella?
it was obvious that the lamb had been stolen.:it为先行词,起到形式主语的作用,逻辑主语是that引导的从句(that the lamb had been stolen)

After telling several of his friends about the theft, Dimitri found out that his neighbour, Aleko, had suddenly acquired a new lamb. come in:强调in“进入”,本文表示“回到家里”
【语法小学堂】it would not prove difficult:prove是连系动词,prove difficult证明是困难的。 比如:taste good尝起来不错;She seems angry.

He told him he had better return it:本句是间接引语,完整句子应是He told him (that) he had better return it. You’d better not wake him up when you come in.
deny /dɪ'naɪ/: to say that something is not true, or that you do not believe something否认,否定,用法:deny doing sth,如:Two men have denied murdering a woman at a remote picnic spot.

Ashamed of having acted so rashly, Dimitri apologized to Aleko for having accused him. 本句中ashamed of可以看做(being) ashamed of 省略了分词being的短语形式,在句中作原因状语。
dye /daɪ/ :If you dye something such as hair orcloth, you change its colour by soaking it in a special liquid. The women prepared, spun, and dyed the wool.
