喝汤到底是“drink soup”还是“eat soup”呢?

因为文化的不同，英文中的soup和中文的“汤”是有细微区别的。比如西餐中的汤，一般都很稠，有奶油、肉、蔬菜等，要用勺子送到嘴里吃。所以在英文中，饮用盛在碗里的汤，要用动词eat。

例：

It is polite toeat soup with a spoon and not make any noise.

喝汤时要用勺子舀着喝，也不能发出声音，这是礼貌。

eat one's lunch

击败某人、智斗或用武力战胜某人。

就像学校里的恶霸把孩子们的午餐拿走吃掉一样。

例：

Unless we're careful, foreign competitors will eat our lunch.

除非我们非常小心，要不然那些外来的竞争对手就会打败我们。

记住：吃午餐是have lunch哦。

eat crow 

认错

crow n. 乌鸦；鸡鸣；撬棍。eat crow是俗语，意思是“认错”

例：

His predications were completely wrong, and he had to eat crow.

他的预测完全错了，因此不得不认错。

to eat one's hat

当一个人说to eat his hat，那就是他十分肯定他说的话是对的，要是他错了，他宁可把自己的帽子给吃了。中文的意思就是：要是他错了，他就不姓张，或不姓李等等。

例：

If we don't win the national championship this year, I'll eat my hat.

要是我们今年不能获得全国足球赛冠军的话，我就不姓王。

eat no fish and play the game

光明正大，为人可靠

eat no fish and play the game出自一个典故，说的是在英国历史上的伊丽莎白一世时期，信奉英国国教的信徒拒绝遵从反对英国国教的罗马天主教在星期五只吃鱼的习惯，所以eat no fish指“光明正大”。

例：

John can be relied on. He eats no fish and plays the game.

约翰为人可靠，他既忠诚又老实。
