Hi. My name is Yoyo and I live in Ooklesville.
You might wonder where is Ooklesville?
I can’t tell you exactly, except it is yonder from where the ordinary might wander.

So how did I end up here in this quaint, little place, that’s absent of everything except the color on my face.

Truth be told, I was trying to find somewhere…..anywhere….where I could fit in.

Growing up, I was a little different. Odd some would say.
Weird. Gross. Ugly. Others might call me a mistake.

I did try for a while to fit in….to be like everyone else and not be different.

But my difference was indifferent to me and kept showing up for everyone else to see.

IMAGE: Maybe a picture of me trying to paint myself with a color.

So I decided to leave. There are those that will say that I had given up.

But I would argue that I was giving in…giving in to being different.

I went home and went through all my stuff, which can be a lot, especially if you’ve saved everything from when you grew up.

I sorted through things…what matters and what matters not… until I could hold everything that was important to me with just one knot.

I thought that all that matters would be quite heavy,
but I carried it all quite easily in giant pair of white undies.

I walked nearby, then away, to a way that was further.
Past the past into now, I saw tomorrow.
    I had finally reached farther.

My new place was a blank space where beginnings to endings meant endings became beginnings.

There was nothing and no one, which might be daunting to someone.

Full of a calming quiet, it let me ponder a thought.

I looked down on the ground, upon which I did see, a white wooden stick and a tiny bottle of ink. Underneath lay a rock with the following inscription:

    A gift for you
    Who have reached thus far
    Just one anything
I will allow you to draw

    Hmmmm…. just one anything.
    What would that be?
    A cape? No. A unicorn?
    A boat on the sea?
    I felt a nervous wreck.
My life was now full of maybes.

“Calm down.” I said to myself.
    Think…Yoyo…think.
    Go back through your life.
What was that one single anything
you’ve always wanted time and again?
Aha! I finally knew…it was a true friend.

I popped open the cork and grabbed the wood stick
and then dipped it carefully into the bottle of ink.
    But there was no paper.
Help! What could I write on?
I scurried about to find something.
Surely there must be a scrap but there was nothing.

I thought of all the things I had colored
when I was little and had gotten in trouble for.
Furniture, walls, my baby brother’s face,
but my new place only had white, open space.

The ink on my stick had already dried out.
Afraid the rest might go bad,
I decided to cork the bottle up.
But now the cork was nowhere to be found!

Was I going to lose my chance
to draw my one any thing?
“No way in heck!” I said,
and as I just started drawing,
I watched the ink turn into something.

I wasn’t sure what my new friend would look like.
I just wanted her to be fun, funny, and nice.
So I drew a circle for a head,
stick arms, legs, body, and neck.

I went to sleep that night
dreaming of my new, good life…
    a friend to play with,
    to laugh and share secrets.

I awoke the next morning eager to find
    my stick figure friend
    but my drawing was gone.

    I looked around and around,
    only white space surround.
    In circles I spun dizzily,
did my only friend leave me?

    Forlorn and sad
    I crumpled into a pile.
Then tap, tap, tap on my shoulder
I looked up to see a big blue smile.

    “Ookaloolooloo.” She giggled,
    then introduced herself,
    “Hi! My name is Ookles.
I’m your friend that you doodled.”

To my surprise, my new friend looked just like me.

“Yay!” I exclaimed, “Can this be?”
“My very own friend. I have one finally!”
“What should we do, Ookles?” I asked excitedly.

“I have a secret to tell you.” She said.

“A secret?” I wondered what it could be.
I waited for her words, wide eyed and ready.

“Hold on. Before I tell you, let’s celebrate!”
    “Let’s cheer the ookaloolooloo way.”

    “Ookaloolooloo. Ookaloolooloo.”
    She laughed and then tumbled
into a somersault. So then I followed.

    “Ookaloolooloo. Ookaloolooloo.”
I tucked my legs, then my head on the floor,
and rolled over like a ball.

    “Ookaloolooloo. Ookaloolooloo.”

    “Ookaloolooloo. Ookaloolooloo.”

“There’s something about this place that I have to tell you.”
She motioned her finger for me to come hither.
I placed my ear next to her and she began to whisper.

    “Expect the unexpected.
    Let all things be accepted.
Anything can become something and turn into everything.”

    “Huh….what? Is that a riddle?”
I asked Ookles. I was puzzled.
“No. It’s an answer.” She replied with a smile and then giggled.

“Ookles?” I asked, “What do you call this place?”

“I don’t think it has a name yet,” she answered, “since it just got made.”

    “Made by who?”

    “Made by you.”

“By me?” I replied with surprise. “What? How? When?”

“Remember,” said Ookles, “When you wished for a place where you could fit in…
a place where you could make a new, true-blue friend.”

I jumped up and down. “YIPAROO!!!” I shouted, as I pointed at Ookles.
“OOKLESVILLE!” I exclaimed, “I hereby name this place after you.”

Ookles and I had so much fun that day.
We became so many things in the white open space.

Wild horses galloping through grassy plains
Hopping frogs jumping over bogs in a lake
    Burrowing rabbits hiding from foxes
Tigers chasing monkeys through the forest
Elephants bellowing loudly with their trunks
Alligators floating stealthily in a swamp
Caterpillars in cocoons dangling from trees
Flowers waiting patiently for bumble bees
Clouds in the sky basking in the sun
Snowmen catching snowflakes with their tongues

    With so many delightful moments,
    time had passed quickly,
and the two blue spotted friends were now hungry.
    “What should we eat?”
    We asked each other simultaneously.

Ookles closed her eyes, squeezing them shut
as she searched inside her head for a thought.
“Aha!” her eyes opened as she shouted out excitedly.
“There’s ookleberries that grow on an ookleberry tree.”
“Over yonder, it’s a bit of a far wander.”
Too tired to walk, the girls began to ponder.

“How should we get there?” I wondered.
“By car, bus, train, or ferry?”

To which Ookles replied, “How about
    something a little more extraordinary?”

She pushed her hands outwards into the air.
I watched, excited, shocked, then scared,
as my friend pushed harder, her arms began to disappear.

“Don’t worry.” Ookles responded. “It’s a space pocket!”
“If you think of something enough, you can reach in and find it.”
Her shoulders and body were twisting and turning,
as her arms wiggled and waggled to find that something.

“What could it be?” I squatted down and tried to peek.
“I want to see, I want to see.” I repeated impatiently.

“Hold on…” Ookles said, “Wait…I’ve got it. Help me Yoyo!”

That something was big and heavy and Ookles was struggling.
I grabbed onto my friend’s belt and we both started tugging.

There was a jingle, then jangle
From a bell that did dangle.
    A clip then a clop
    A thump then a stomp
Out of the air did appear
    A black and white patchy
    Nose, face, and ears.

“Oh my gosh. It’s a cow?!?!” I shouted, elated.
    “Oookaloolooloo. Ookaloolooloo.”
The two best friends did somersaults and celebrated.

The cow looked towards the blue spotted pair,
then ran towards them and jumped.

“Whoa! Wow! Yipee!” The girls cheered,
As our new black and white patched friend
Soared and tumbled thru the air.

The cow landed with a clonk and then clink.
The bell was ringing as her tail flicked.
She kicked up her hooves and nodded her head,
And smiled a bright, white toothy smile.
    “Ookamoomoomoo. Ookamoomoomoo.” The cow said.

    “Hello!”
    “Hello!”
    “I’m Ookles.”
    “I’m Yoyo.”

“I’m Mew Mew Moo. And do you know what cows do?”
“YES!” We both exclaimed. “They mooooo!”

“No!”Mew Mew Moo answered with a grin. “They mooove!”
The gentle cow lowered her head.
“Climb onto my back!” She said. “To the ookleberry tree
    to find ookleberries.”

The three friends traveled far and away,
through trails and fields of white open space.
On their new adventure they did wander
until the ookleberry tree they did discover.
Magnificent it stood, a tall, wooden wonder,
and upon each branch the ookleberreis
did dangle in their blue spotted splendor.

"Look! Look!" The friends all did chime.
The polka dotted fruit did hang
out of reach, their sweet sublime.

"Hold on girls!" Mew mew moo said,
as she stood up on her back legs and lifted her neck.
Ookles scooted up and sat on top of the fuzzy cow’s head.
She reached for the ookleberries but grabbed a twig instead.
I tried next, though I was taller,
but I was not tall enough,
    the berries were still farther.

"I know how to get closer."
Ookles said to me. “Let me climb on your back
and then stand on your shoulders.”
I hunched over as Ookles carefully maneuvered.
She raised herself slowly, sometimes with a bobble,
stopping to catch her balance until there was no wobble.

    Ookle’s arms stretched up high,
the blue spotted fruit seemed close at last.
    Her fingertips touched the ookleberry,
but it was still too far to grasp.

"Use that twig that you grabbed from the tree earlier."
I shouted to my little friend to remind her.
Behind her ear, ookles had tucked the stick,
she grabbed it and poked the ookleberry until she heard a click.

Back and forth the yummy ookleberry swung,
until it broke from the branch from which it hung.
My hand reached out to stop its plunge.
Another and another totaled two and then three.
    Enough ookleberries for everybody!

Ookles jumped down onto Mew Mew Moo then the ground.

As she stood, waiting and ready,
I lowered each fruit, one by one, delicately,
and Ookles carefully took the precious ookleberries.

    Ookaloolooloo ookaloolooloo

    The three friends laughed, celebrated
    and danced with glee.
We spun in circles until we were dizzy, then fell to the ground holding our ookleberries.

    We gazed in amazement
    at the delicious, delightful delicacy.

    Speckles of bright blue berries
    that were yummy and sweet,
    sprinkled like electric confetti
atop the white glazed round treat.

    A ball of brightness
that shone shiny under the sun
    that to gaze upon it
    would catch your reflection.

    Ookles jumped up suddenly
    holding the blue dotted berry
above her head way up high
    as she shouted with delight.

    “Now the ookleberry
    is quite special indeed.
    What’s inside is what
    makes it unique. “

“What’s inside?” Mew Mew Moo and I asked, wide eyed and curious.
To which Ookles replied, “It can be something, anything, and everything you dream of.”

Both Mew Mew Moo and I scratched our heads as we tried to think of a thought.
Our brains twisted and turned but still we could not figure it out.

I looked perplexed. “A dream? But how can a dream fit in such a tiny little thing?

“Haha!” Ookles smiled, “Dreams come in many sizes…small, medium, and big.”
“ A dream can live anywhere as long as you keep dreaming of it.”

Ookles continued, “Let's all give it a try.
When I count to three, close your eyes…
and think of the ookleberry and
what you'd like to find inside.”

    "One...two...three!
    Close your eyes everybody!"
    Ookles

Mew mew moo's face was calm and peaceful
Her tasty treat juggled in her mind in circles.

Ookles had a grin and then a great big smile,
knowing her magnificent dream would be realized in a while.

But my face…it squirmed. My eyebrows furrowed.
I had so many dreams but didn't know which one to follow.
I wriggled and squiggled my nose and lips
in hopes it would help me decide which one to pick.
I felt worried and anxious and asked my friends, "What if I choose wrong?"
To which Ookles replied, "The great thing about dreams is that you can have more than one."

I felt at ease by my friend’s words and then said contentedly,
“I'll wait to see what the ookleberry has in store for me.”

Mew mew moo jumped up and down in anticipation,
and yelled, “Let’s hurry and see what's inside of them!”

She nibbled open the polka dotted fruit
and out came spinning a little salt cube.

“Yummy!” She exclaimed, “My favorite...salt lick candy!”
As she gobbled her treat in a one, big, gulp jiffy.

Ookles laughed loudly. “Heehee next is me!”
as she peeled her ookleberry, on purpose, quite slowly.

We were antsy as we watched her and yelled, “Hurry Ookles hurry!”

As she peeled her ookleberry, noodles began to spill,
until they piled up so high, into a tall, mountainous hill.

"Oh my goodness!" Mew mew moo and I screamed excitedly.

Ookles shouted. "Oodles of ooklenoodles to eat for everybody!”

We each grabbed a noodle and began to slurp
to see who would get to the end first.

But the ooklenoodle seemed to go on endlessly.
In fact, eating an ooklenoodle was like a magical journey.

Though each one looked quite similar in appearance,
each ooklenoodle was actually very different.

What one thought about became what one would taste.
Mew mew moo's noodle turned into molasses, barley, alfalfa, carrots, and hay.

Ookles’ ooklenoodle became a five-course dinner:
Edamame, bow tie pasta, apple, bratwurst, and a hamburger.

I thought of a favorite treat that I avoided often because it was smelly.

So my ooklenoodle tasted like spaghetti and garlic but made my breath smell like strawberries.

"Hhhhhiiii". I breathed on my friends so that they would indeed see
that my breath smelled fruity instead of garlicky and stinky.

"Heeeeeyyyy! Haha! We want to try."
Mew mew moo and Ookles ate a noodle while closing their eyes.
"Bleh." Ookles said. "Sorry Yoyo…I still don't like it."
She closed her eyes and immediately thought of chocolate.

“That’s okay,” I told her. “At least you tried.”
“Sometimes you have to try something to know what you do and don’t like.”

“Yum!” Mew Mew Moo exclaimed as she gobbled her noodle quickly.
Then she burped out a bubble that popped and smelled like a berry.

“Yo Yo! Yo Yo!” Mew Mew Moo and Ookles chanted excitedly.

“I’m next?!” I said, still wondering what was inside my ookleberry.

I have to admit that I was a bit frightened.
What if I opened it up and inside was nothing?

I hesitated and plucked off one of the blue spotted dots,
threw it in the air and then caught it in my mouth.

I wasn’t too sure how to describe what I was tasting.
My friends were all looking at me and waiting for me to say something.

Then I bursted out, “It’s like 28 flavors of ice cream all together melting.”

Ookles and Mew Mew Moo each grabbed one of the tiny berries and scarfed them down like pieces of candy.

They shouted in unison each flavor as they tasted them.

    “Chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, neopolitan
Coconut, pistachio, lemon sorbet, rum raisin

Banana, peppermint, peanut butter and jelly
Rocky road, mango, peach, cheesecake, raspberry

Cookie dough, butterscotch, pecan praline, tutti frutti
yuzu, green tea, key lime, black cherry

Butterscotch, orange sorbet, s’mores, and the finale …banana split with fudge brownie topped with a cherry.”

I looked at my ookleberry, finally ready,
and peeled it open, slowly but surely.
I peeked into the fruit but couldn’t quite see,
what was inside, waiting for me.

I shook the polka dotted fruit, there was a pitter, then a patter.
So I shook it some more and out fell what mattered.

I looked down on the ground and there it was.
A tiny, miniature ookleberry…so I picked it up.
This was what I had been dreaming of.

I held the blue speckled fruit so that we could all see
what the polka dotted berry had in store for me.

When all of a sudden, the ookleberry jumped.
Boing…boing. It made a noise as it moved down and up.
It then lay in a lull as it finally stopped,
but not for long for soon there was a pop.

Out sprung a sprig with a tiny green leaf,
that sprouted taller and taller from inches to feet.

It soon became too big to hold so I let it go
It rooted itself into the ground and started to grow.
We looked down, then up, then way up high
As it grew from seedling to sapling to tree before our eyes.

In anticipation, we stood and watched excitedly then delightfully.
Blossoms bloomed like fireworks and then popped into ookleberries.

I stepped back to breathe in the blossoms’ sweet fragrance,
while reveling in the ookleberry’s magical magnificence.
Ooklesville was a place that I created from my imagination,
Where dreams were dreamed, then made to be experienced
with Ookles and Mew Mew Moo, my true friends
who accepted and loved me for being different.

Ookles and Mew Mew Moo walked towards me smiling,
Then Ookles said, “An ookleberry tree! What a wonderful thing!
More ookleberries and dreams to keep sharing.
For what is in a dream but everything…
And anything can be something and turn into everything.
All you have to do is keep on dreaming!”

We lay under the ookleberry tree and looked up happily and wondered what would be inside of the next ookleberry?
