ROSES IN ARRANGEMENTS
One of the great pleasures of growing roses is to cut and arrange them in the home. Whether a single flower in a narrow jar or a vase overflowing with blooms, roses bring life to a room in way few other things can. Almost all roses are suitable for cutting but Old Roses and David Austin’s English Roses are ideal. They are less stiff in growth than most modern roses, so they create the most graceful of arrangements. Roses not only look beautiful on their own but also blended with other flowers and foliage.

CLIMBERS ON WALLS
One of the best places to grow a climber is on a wall, particularly the walls of a house. Roses always look best when closest to where we live. The formality of architecture contrasts beautifully with the natural growth of the roses. A wall also has the effect of drawing roses to a much greater height than they would grow elsewhere. This is particularly advantageous in the case of shorter growing roses, such as David Austin’s English Climbers. Most climbers will thrive on a sunny south or west facing wall, although some varieties will flourish on a shady north-facing wall.

CLIMBERS ON STRUCTURES
Roses are seldom better displayed than when looking down at us from above, so Climbing Roses are the amongst the most valuable of all garden roses. They are perfectly suited to growing over arches and on pillars, trellises, pergolas, pillars and obelisks. Nearly all climbers have the advantage of repeat-flowering, providing colour and interest all summer long. David Austin’s English Climbers usually reach a height of about 12ft, so are ideal for smaller structures. They also have the remarkable ability to flower all the way down to the base of the plant.

RAMBLERS ON WALLS
Ramblers usually flower with great freedom once a year. They send up strong, long stems from the base of the plant, which makes them ideal for covering large areas. Most ramblers will thrive on a sunny south or west facing wall, although some varieties will still flourish on a shady north-facing wall. When selecting ramblers to grow on walls, we recommend choosing varieties with flexible stems, which are easy to fan out. David Austin’s English Ramblers have typical flexible, slender growth and have the advantage of flowering in flushes throughout the summer.

RAMBLERS ON STRUCTURES
Ramblers are a great way of bringing height into the garden. They flower with great freedom, producing a mass of bloom, but usually only once a year. In general, they are ideal for growing on trellises, arches, pergolas, pillars, arbours, obelisks, as well as into trees. When selecting a structure on which to grow a rambler, ensure that it is strong enough for the rose. Conversely, try to choose a rambler which will not overwhelm the structure. David Austin’s English Ramblers are vigorous, without being too tall. They also have the advantage of flowering in flushes throughout the summer.

ENGLISH ROSE HEDGING
English Rose hedges are particularly valuable in the garden. Unlike most other hedges they will flower prolifically, producing flushes of glorious, fragrant blooms throughout the summer. They have attractive, healthy green foliage and most have thorns which act as a deterrent to intruders. We recommend planting them along the front of the garden facing the road, or within the garden to divide one area from another. Depending on the variety, English Rose hedges may vary in height from low to quite tall. The final height can be adjusted by pruning.

ROSE GARDENS
If you have sufficient space, it is possible to plant an entire garden of roses. A rose garden is a wonderful place to unwind and can also add value to your home. It can be a traditional formal rose garden or something more informal and imaginative, such as two long borders facing a path and intersected occasionally with other paths. A rose garden can be quite small, or something altogether more extensive. We have created many beautiful rose gardens around the world and would be happy to advise you on this subject.
