3 Offside (2006)
Sexism in football comes in different guises, and in this endearing movie, which revolves around the 2006 World Cup qualifying match between Iran and Bahrain in Iran, women are banned from entering the stadium. But that doesn’t stop six Iranian female fans from trying to get in disguised as boys with national colours painted on their faces, their love of football much more important than the threat of imprisonment. Unfortunately they are caught, though one woman escapes, and they’re able to catch the final anxious moments of the game before celebrating the result.
4 The Damned United (2009)
We’ll never know the full story of what really happened during Brian Clough’s controversial 44-day reign as manager of Leeds United in 1974, but this darkly humorous version of events has been well received as a movie. Michael Sheen and Timothy Spall give noteworthy performances as ego-centric Clough and his trusted assistant manager Peter Taylor as scenes jump between Clough’s glory days at Derby County and disasters at Leeds.
5 Class of '92 (2013)
Before football icon David Beckham and Lionesses manager Phillip Neville won trophies at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, they were part of the class of '92. Current Wales boss Ryan Giggs, Phillip’s pundit brother Gary Neville, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes complete the talented six that form the focus of this cinematic documentary, set against the backdrop of Britain's dramatic social and cultural changes in the Nineties.
