用餐时,两人聊起棒球。老人快活地说起,在美国联盟里,洋基队是最棒的。
"They lost today."the boy told him.
老人听了孩子这话,不以为然。他的答复非常的圣地亚哥。(强烈建议大家在读这本书时也听听有声书的朗读,喜马拉雅上就有。That means nothing这句读的非常非常棒!)
"That means nothing.The geat DiMaggio is himself again."
海明威写这句话有双关之义。
老人认为一时的失败根本不算什么,伟大的球员很快就能恢复状态。
他像对自己自信一样,也对自己钟爱的球队坚信不疑。
当然,我们也希望84天没打到鱼的老人——Santiago is himself again。

可能是受老人的影响,小男孩对棒球也很了解,并且他很快将话题由棒球明星转到渔夫这个行当上来。
毫无疑问,老人就是孩子心目中最棒的一个。
"And the best fisherman is you."
"No.I know others better."
虽然老人不这么想,但孩子还是依然笃定。
"There are many good fisherman and some great ones.But there is only you."
老人用玩笑接话:
"Thank you.You make me happy.I hope no fish will come along so great that he will prove us wrong."
然而孩子依然很认真。老人说的是玩笑话,孩子却执拗地把话题拉回现实。
"There is no such fish if you are still strong as you say."
这次老人也是很认真地回答。
"I may not be as strong as I think,"the old man said."But I know many tricks and I have resolution."
这是老人第二次提到自己懂得很多tricks。
从这里看出,海明威即使是要塑造一位“硬汉”形象,却也没有赋予他“高大全”的特质,而是有自知之明,知道自己超越不了自然规律。
他毕竟是老了啊。
这一页的末尾,老人说:
"Age is my alarm clock,"the old man said."Why do old men wake so early?Is it to have one longer day?"
是因为老人们的时日不多了,所以才醒的很早吗?
