Hanging out in the countryside always sounds tempting to those who are confined within concrete buildings all day long. Last Sunday afternoon, we plotted to flee from the city for some ‘nature’, if only for a short while.
After some quick search on Auto map , we locked a lake named Machang for our first stop. It’s in Quanjiao county, about a hour and forty minutes drive.
After getting off the highway, we started our free traveler’s style. Ignoring the Auto Map’s instruction, we took a detour along a county road . It was just a one-lane country road , but luxuriously with two rows of big evergreen trees guarding on both sides. The trees were freakishly green and towering, so when you drove between them, you got the feeling that you were traveling through a green tunnel. The road began very straight and flat in the fields for the first few miles, then it rolled forward like waves when it went up and down the hills. It was such an interesting ride.
When we got to our first destination, we found where the lake should have been had turned into a meadow. The water seemed to retreat for a long time, its broad and flat river bed had been covered by long wild weeds . But when you stood on a higher place and looked over the meadow to far far ahead, you got a view of a silver gliding among the green and shimmering sparkly in the sunlight, that’s the lake, it’s still there but shank and hidden by the season .
We tried to walk down the river bed, but we flinched at the sight of the long grass. Although we saw some locals down in the river bed, waving a long pole to drive a large flock of white-feathered ducks back home. It was nearly four pm, but we planned to have a close look of a nearby village, so we didn’t linger there long before we started back on the road again.
To be continued...
