Some day in the future, the world is totally ruined after a cruel war. People remain build a new system to prevent such devastating things from happening again. They divide people into five categories: Dauntless(brave), Erudite(intelligent), Abnegation(selflessness), Amity(kindness) and Candor(honesty). Everyone will have to choose a faction for themselves tolive with when they enter 16 years old. After the ceremony some of them may stay in the old faction with their family, others may transfer to a new one despite where they come from. All of them are not allowed to discuss their choice with others including their family. Instead they can only get reference from a so-called aptitude test showing which faction they are supposed to be in among the five according to their characteristics. However, although most people are inclined to be dauntless, erudite etc, some people's results are inconclusive which means they have mixed features. They show different characteristics when facing various situations. They are divergent. And this makes them in great danger. The leadership of Erudite who wants to replace the Abnegation leadership to take charge of the whole world is looking for divergent people and desperate to kill them because those uncontrollable pose a severe threat to their revolution. The story stars a divergent girl called Beatrice who transfers from Abnegation to Dauntless where she goes through fierce tests and competitions to finally become a true member of Dauntless. But soon after the initiation welcome party in the Dauntless ends, all of them are turned into sleepwalkers by some kind of serum injected into their necks, and the revolution raised by Erudite and Dauntless leaders starts. Dauntless warriors march in an army toward the Abnegation headquarters and kill as many as they can. During the massacre, Beatrice who is immune to the serum has no choice but expose herself as a divergent to save people she loves and destroy the simulation system to wake the Dauntless up, putting an end to everything.

题材和主旨不予置评，但情节紧凑，语言通俗易懂，作为英语学习读物很不错。里面有些非常地道的用法，比如名词作动词用。e.g. He eyes him. 他望向了他。He worms his way out of the dormitory他像虫子一样爬出了宿舍。He hands me a book.他给了我一本书。
还有一些有趣的说法，比如goose bump 鸡皮疙瘩。英文中文两相对比让我很惊讶的发现，二者的说法都包含动物。尽管语言不同，但人们对同一种感觉，同一种事物的描述是相去不远的。人类的想象力可真是贫乏啊。
书中让我感触最深的是各种各样的动词和形容词。因为无畏派有很多动作情节，描写的很详尽，句子结构大部分是一个常用动词加上一个介词。这种描述性的表达可能是非母语人士最难学会的地方，毕竟用法太活了。而形容词虽多，但是容易掌握一些，只要注意词的感情色彩和程度，做好类比就可以了。当然还要区分哪些形容词比较书面化，哪些是口语的用法。
总体来说，这个难度刚好，内容可以完全吃透，同时增加词汇量和语感。还可以配合翻拍的电影加深理解(虽然电影拍的一言难尽)。是很棒的学习素材。期待Insurgent。The adventure continues.
