During the process of my time in school Art class clay making, I’ve observed that clay goes through five stages. I created a clay plate that clearly displays these five stages.
Stage I - Greenware
Greenware is the stage where the clay is soft, carvable and moldable. This is where you can make the shape you want and stick external pieces of clay to it.
In my case, I carved out a disk from a slab of clay. I then smoothed it out with the kidney (a clay smoothing tool) and stretched the clay. I got the shape it wanted and then cut out two clay coils for the bottom of my plate. The single coil wasn’t long enough so I used a technique called scoring and slipping and connected the two coils together.
Scoring and slipping is a technique where you use the clay cutting tool make scratches on where you want to join the two pieces (as shown above) and using some water as a ‘clay glue’ (or clay slip) you press the pieces together and massage it with the kidney to create a larger piece or extension of your original piece of clay.
This is all part of the Greenware process.
Next, I put the clay on our cake spinner and connected the coil with the clay disk I made earlier. I adjusted it and used the kidney to smooth out the underside of the plate.
I was almost done. I removed the plate and moulded the edges of the clay to form a lip.
This marks the end of the Greenware process, where the clay is moldable, shapeable and attachable.
Stage II - Leather Hard
After the clay has dried for around a day, you’ve reached the Leather Hard stage. This is where there is still moisture inside the clay but hard enough for you to start a bit of sgraffito. The clay turns a light grey colour and you are unable to attach external pieces.
I wasn’t here for the Leather Hard stage, but one prediction I could make was that our plate took a bit longer to dry because we added too much water during the Greenware stage. The Leather Hard stage is dependent on the air humidity and the amount of water inside the clay.
Stage III - Bone Dry
Bone Dry clay is the stage where the water has completely dried and is where sgraffito carving the clay is most optimal. It is now an almost white colour and a dusty feeling when you touch it. In this stage, the clay is still prone to cracking though. This stage is a very important stage as it has to be Bone Dry before it gets fired otherwise the moisture inside will cause the clay to explode.
For my Bone Dry experience, I had to carve the pattern I wanted on the plate. But first I had to paint them a white glaze over it to make the pattern show through. After you’ve carved the pattern you want, you have to start the first round of firing the clay.
Stage IV - Bisqueware
After firing the clay for one day, you have reached the Bisqueware stage were the clay is a very off-white colour. The clay is much lighter than it was before any of the previous stages and is very porous, almost like Chinese nougat candy. Bisqueware is basically the stage where the clay piece has been only fired once and is ready for the final stage.
Stage V - Glazeware
Glazeware is the final stage. This is where you have painted (AKA Glazed) and fired the clay once. Firing the clay one more time will complete your project!
Postscript
I don't have a photo of the finished plate because I accidentally dropped the plate!
