After 125 years of producing only the soft stuff, Coca-Cola plans to launch its first alcoholic drink. The fizzy-pop maker is to try the “modest experiment” in Japan, where Chu-Hi—alcopops enhanced with shochu, a local spirit—have become popular in recent years.
Like many of its competitors, Coke has seen sales of its sugary-soda lines fall, encouraging it to diversify. The low alcohol canned drink will be launched in Japan, home to a thriving if competitive industry, with countless Chu-Hi flavoured drinks-from kiwi to yuzu - sitting on convenience store shelves across the country.
1.plan to do sth
2.launch 推出
3.become popular
4.see sales fall
5.encourage sb to do sth
Highlighting how “unique” this venture was for the company, Mr Garduño, who did not specify a timeline for the new product, added: “Coca-Cola has always focused entirely on non-alcoholic beverages, and this is a modest experiment for a specific slice of our market.
“The Chu-Hi category is found almost exclusively in Japan. Globally, it’s not uncommon for non-alcoholic beverages to be sold in the same system as alcoholic beverages. It makes sense to give this a try in our market.”
The concept of alcoholic Coca-Cola drinks, however, was likely to stay within Japan rather than expand globally, due to the “unique and special” qualities of the Japanese market, he added.
A carbonated soft drink containing an extract of the cola nut and other flavorings, also regionally called dope
Plural of colon
Plural of colon
A trademark used for a soft drink, short for Coca-Cola
The solid residue of impure carbon obtained from bituminous coal and other carbonaceous materials after removal of volatile material by destructive distillation. It is used as a fuel and in making steel 焦炭
Cocaine
In the South any soft drink, regardless of flavor or brand name, is referred to as a Coke, cold drink, or just plain drink
