defence这个词，我们更熟悉的是它作为“防守、辩护”的词义，但此处要看到搭配的谓语says说明是指人，此处指辩方、辩护律师，比如：The defense called only one witness. 辩方只传召了一个证人。
behead及物动词，看到前缀be-，就应该想到“去掉”的含义，那么behead的词义就很明确了：斩首。此处用的是名词形式beheading。

convict的搭配需要注意一下，可以表示“已被定罪的”，放在名词前面修饰，比如a convicted murderer 已定罪的谋杀犯，作动词时表示“判某人有……罪”，搭配是convict sb of/on sth，比如
She was convicted of/on shoplifting. 她被判犯有偷窃商店货物罪。
abduction的动词是abduct，绑架，它主要是新闻用语。 在日常英语中，人们一般说kidnap。比如：He was kidnapped on his way to the airport. 他在去机场的路上被人绑架。

version此处表示某人对于某件事不同于其他人的描述，说法，比如according to the official version of events 根据官方对事件的说法。
the version of sth.还可以表示某一群体或某一时期[解释做]某事的方式，比如大家在办公室里可能喜欢在茶水间喝咖啡闲聊，The coffee break is the adult version of recess. 工间喝咖啡是成人的休息方式。
spiral这个词非常形象，螺旋式过程，可以表示某个事物迅速恶化或改善，比如我们常说的某人某事物持续走下坡路，sb./sth. goes into/in a spiral of decline。
这个词还可以搭配downward/upward等表示方位移动的形容词，形容一个事物向上或向下的发展势能，比如这阵子受贸易战影响，某家公司越来越不景气，就可以说The company is in a downward spiral.
While the state of Illinois has outlawed capital punishment, a federal trial allowed prosecutors to seek the death penalty.虽然伊利诺伊州已经废除了死刑，但是联邦法院的审判允许检方申请死刑。
国内新闻报道章莹颖案件的时候，会提到“废除死刑”，这个“废除”就是outlaw：将…定为非法，全面禁止，比如：The bill would have outlawed several types of guns. 这项法案将全面禁用几种枪支。

be obssessed with一般含贬义，痴迷不好的事物，而且obssess这个词取此意时，多用被动。但要注意区分be obssessed with和be obssessing about/over。前者是痴迷于，后者是对某事物过分关心，比如：
Stop obsessing about your hair. It’s fine. 别再过于担心你的头发了，它看上去很好。
