    Chapter 9 The Midnight Duel

    Harry and Malfoy were deadly foe.Due to Malfoy's tease,Harry were lucky to be enrolled in Gryffindor's Quidditch  team because of his exquisite flying on the broomstick to fetch Neville's Remembrall(a magic ball which could tell its master what had been forgotten).

    To Malfoy's disappointment,Harry was not expelled for his recklessness and unexpecedly be a seeker in Quidditch team.However ,the hatred bewteen Malfoy and  Harry was deeper and deeper,so Malfoy suggested a wizard's duel in midnight and Harry accepted this provocation.

    The appointed Midnight was approaching,but Malfoy chose not to come but to tip Filch off,which caused a great trouble for Harry and his friends to escape.This plot leaded to the appearance of a three-headed monster guarding something valuable in the third floor.


    Words and phrases:

    1.make a ˈfool of yourself :to do sth stupid which makes other people think that you are a fool 丢脸

    ◆ I made a complete fool of myself in front of everyone! 我当众出了大丑了!

    2.talk =stories/rumours 传闻;谣言

    [uncountable ] talk(of sth/of doing sth) | talk(that…) stories that suggest a particular thing might happen in the future 传言;谣言;流言蜚语;揣测

    ◆ There was talk in Washington of sending in troops. 华盛顿有派兵的谣传。

    3.in a flash=immediately

    collapse, fall, etc. in a ˈheap:to fall down heavily and not move 重重地倒下(不能动)

    4.streak V

    1>[transitive ] to mark or cover sth with streaks 在…上画条纹(或留下条痕);使布满条纹(或条痕)

    tear-streaked face =Tears streaked her face. 她脸上是道道泪痕。

    2.[intransitive ] + adv./prep. to move very fast in a particular direction 飞奔;疾驰

    The glass ball streaked back toward the ground玻璃球飞快地滚向地面

    5.stick up for=stand up for

    6.make a sharp about-face 做了个急转弯

    7.bend rule 违规

    8.size sb/sth↔ˈup( informal) to form a judgement or an opinion about sb/sth 估量;判断 

    ◆ She knew that he was looking at her, sizing her up. 她知道他在盯着她看,打量她。

    ◆ He sized up the situation very quickly. 他很快对形势作出了判断。

    9.chicken out (of sth/of doing sth)( informal): to decide not to do sth because you are afraid 因害怕而放弃;临阵退缩;胆怯

    10.get over sth 恢复过来,“回过神”

    11.lose sb/sth= to escape from sb/sth 逃避;逃脱 SYN evade , shake off

    trot:to move forward at a speed that is faster than a walk and slower than a canter 小跑

    jog :run slowly and steadily for a long time, especially for exercise慢跑

    scurry:to run with quick short steps 碎步疾跑

    gallop:to run very quickly 飞跑;奔跑

    hurtle:to move very fast in a particular direction (向某个方向)飞驰,猛冲

    sprint:to run or swim a short distance very fast 短距离快速奔跑(或游泳)

    14.march on:to move on or pass quickly 继续行进;快速经过

    ◆ Time marches on and we still have not made a decision. 时间过得飞快,而我们却还没有拿定主意。

    15.“悄悄走”

    creep:move slowly, quietly and carefully, because you do not want to be seen or heard 悄悄地缓慢行进;蹑手蹑脚地移动

    slope away:[intransitive ] + adv./prep  ( BrE) ( informal) to go somewhere quietly, especially in order to avoid sth/sb 悄悄地走;潜行;溜 


    Sentences:

    2.Neville was hanging on to her every word,desperate for anything that might help him hang on to his broomstick later.

    hang on sb's ˈwords/on sb's every ˈword:to listen with great attention to sb you admire 专心致志地听所崇拜的人讲话;洗耳恭听某人的话

    hang ˈon to sth: to hold sth tightly 抓紧某物◆ Hang on to that rope and don't let go. 抓紧那根绳子,别松手。

    3.表达“愤怒”

      1>Blood was pounding in his ears.

       2>Professor McGonagall was almost speechless with shock,and her glasses flashed furiously.

        3>Neither of them could do more than crack their knuckles and scowl.

    4.折句的异曲同工之妙

       1>He wanted to say something to defend himself,but there seemed to be something wrong with his voice.

       2>Harry nodded silently.He didn't have a clue what was going on.

    5.His stomach twisted as he imagined it.
