According to the statistics given in the article '80% of Hong Kong Secondary Students Unsure About Life Path, with Some Opting to "Lie Flat"' published by Lo Hoi-ying on 8th April, most of the teenagers nowadays in Hong Kong have poor self-identity. This article aims to share some opinions about the issue.
As Lo has mentioned, there is a prevailing concept among teenagers which are named 'lying flat'. It is revealed that teenagers are giving up their own future plans and turning to their basic essential requirement needs, and obeying what the elderly told them to do. Compared to teenagers 20 years ago, they feel less excited about their future, and somewhat like puppets controlled by more experienced adults, since adults nowadays pay much more attention to their children and students, also compared to adults 20 years ago. Are teenagers facing an easier life, with experience from the precursors; or are they facing a more difficult life, as they seldom make decisions on their own? To tell the truth, it is regarded the children following commands from their parents and teachers lack independence, and they might not obtain their ideal life as they didn't make the necessary decisions of their life on their own. Thus, though their life may be easier when they are young, they may face a more difficult life decades of years later. Present teenagers are having a more difficult life because their parents want their life easier by taking shortcuts.
It is foreseeable that teenagers are facing a world more precarious than the world 20 years ago. Recently, nuclear pollution and AI disemployment have been head titles, and these phenomenons have made people concerned. They have to make a living in a more torturous environment. Some of them are anxious; some of them give their faraway dream up and choose hedonism to satisfy their basic needs, thus the buzzword 'lie flat' becomes popular. The fashionable words teenagers are using actually uncover the pain they are coming through.
Though living conditions seem to be better than that of 20 years ago, the quantity of patients with psychological illness is increasing among teenagers. According to Maslow's hierarchy, after the physiological needs are satisfied, human beings will require more on mental support. Thus, though people die for poor hygiene and medical technique is less, there are much more people die of suicide. It is unreasonable to claim that teenagers are facing a better era only basing on the better conditions nowadays.
In conclusion, teenagers nowadays are having a more difficult life.
