Essentially the D16C is a robust, in-line 6-cylinder 16-litre Euro 3 engine producing 610 or 550 bhp, developed on the basis of Volvo's tried-and-tested D12 concept. Amongst other things, it has an advanced electronic engine management system, overhead cams, four valves per cylinder and an integrated cylinder head. In addition to the extra horsepower, the 16-litre engine also has a range of other interesting new features.

Take for example the rear transmission. It is designed to give a significant weight saving, a lower noise level, improved cooling and fewer internal losses. It is also much simpler to fit a power take-off. You can extract an output of 1,000 Nm from power take-off when stationary and 650 Nm when driving.
