很多演讲者面对的难题是他们在观众面前大脑是一片空白。毫无疑问，他们憎恶头脑一片空白，所以他们本能地将大脑填满能想到地最近的东西。大多数情况下都是这样。“我想知道我现在做的是不是正确的！我的头发看起来怎么样？我知道我一定会失败的。”他们的语言一定会应验。
The trouble with many speakers is that they go before an audience with their minds a blank. It is no wonder that nature, abhorring a vacuum,fills them with the nearest thing handy, which generally happens to be, "I wonder if i am doing this right! How does my hair look? I know i shall fail." There prophetic souls are sure to be right.

仅仅被你的话题吸引是不够i的——要获得自信的话，你一定要拥有什么值得你自信的东西。如果你现在没有任何准备地来到观众面前，或者是在此之前对你的话题没有相关的知识的话，你应该有这个意识——应该为你浪费你的观众的时间而感到羞愧。做好准备，知道你将要讲什么。而且大体知道你会怎样讲。完全想清楚怎样做开场白，这样你就不会遇到最初无话可讲的难题。比你的听众更了解你的话题，这样你就没有什么可以害怕的了。
It is not enough to be absorbed by your subject——to acquire self-confidence you must have something in which to be confident. If you go before an audienve without any preparation, previous knowledge of your subject, you ought to be self-conscious—you oughr to be ashamed to steal the time of your audience. Prepare yourself. Know what you are going to talk about, and, in general, how you are going to say it. Have the first few sentences worked out completely so that you may not be troubled in the beginning to find words. Know your subject better than your hearers know it, and you having nothing to fear.
