Day 1

1. dip: …where the main road dipped down into a little hollow  指引读者的视线，有空间沉降的感觉

The sun dipped below the horizon. 太阳落到地平线下了。

2. breath: The air was sweet with the breath of many orchards 很形象

breath of sth. 微量，迹象

a breath of suspicion/scandal 一丝怀疑；丑闻的嫌疑

3. slope: the meadows sloped away in the distance to horizon mists of pearl and purple

v. 倾斜，有角度

sloping shoulders 斜肩

4. arch: …a stretch of road four or five hundred yards long, completely arched over with huge widespreading apple-trees

2）（使）成弓形 The cat arched its back and hissed.

5. bridge: Small branches still manage to stem out all over from the bark of the big horizontal tree that nearly bridges the valley.

Day 2&3

2. shower&sprinkle

One of apple-trees and one of cherry-trees also showered over with blossoms; and their grass was all sprinkled with dandelions.

shower  v.洒落，纷纷降落 Volcanic ash showered down on the town after the eruption.

sprinkle 　v. 撒，洒 sprinkle sugar over the strawberries

3. hoist: The attic is so low that you can only hoist yourself from the waist up and crawl in.

v. 吊起，提升 He hoisted himself onto a high stool. 他抬身坐上了一张高凳子。

4. strike a note: The boxy exterior indeed strikes a 90s’ note.

Day 4&5

1. lump: Adults tend to lump cheetahs and tigers into one kind.

v. lump A and B together/lump A in(with)B 把……归并一起（或合起来考虑）

You can’t lump all Asian languages together. 你不能把所有的亚洲语言混为一谈

2. nestle: The barn-converted house nestles among a quarter-oval panel of firs at the foot of a mountain..

v. 位处，坐落（于安全，隐蔽之处）

The little town nestles snugly at the foot of the hill. 这个小镇偎依在山脚下。

v. 依偎，舒适地坐（或卧）

He hugged her and she nestled against his chest.

3. fence: the second-floor balcony fenced in the front with horizontal rails braced between three posts

v. （用栅栏，或篱笆）围住，隔开

His property is fenced with barbed wire.

Day 6

1. vantage: It gives him a post of vantage. 优势地位

2. She has the fascinating tyranny of youth and the astonishing courage of innocence.

3. 形容发髻：her dark hair was always twisted up in a hard little knot behind with two wire hairpins stuck aggressively through it.

4. garb v.（常用被动态或~oneself）给……穿上（特种）服装，打扮
