基本篇

英英：to make (something, such as an error or problem) worse : to add to (something bad)
例子： He compounded his mistake by announcing it to the whole table.

进阶篇

我比较熟悉它的名词用法以及名词用法，表示“复合（的）”。原来它还有动词用法：“使恶化；使复杂化;加重”，可以用来替代exacerbate。

比如在桌上说这个事真是错上加错，可以说：

He compounded his mistake by announcing it to the whole table.

这儿的医疗体制使问题进一步恶化，可以说：

The problem is compounded by the medical system here.

额外的流血和牺牲只会加重这场悲剧，可以说：

Additional bloodshed and loss of life will only compound the tragedy.

这个词在Principles: Life and Work这本书里出现了6次，而且全是动词用法。看来我低估了它的普及程度。
