A lost ship
lost: If something is lost, or gets lost, you cannot find it, for example, because you have forgotten where you put it.丢失的,如:a lost book.
①The salvage operation had been a complete failure.②The small ship, Elkor, which had been searching the BarentsSea for weeks, was on its way home.③A radio message from the mainland had been received by the ship's captain instructing him to give up the search.④The captain knew that another attempt would be made later, for the sunkenship he was trying to find had been carrying a precious cargo of gold bullion.
salvage /'sælvɪdʒ/:If something is salvaged, someone manages to save it, for example, from a ship that has sunk, or from a building that has been damaged. The team's first task was to decide what equipment could be salvaged.

on its way home:返航途中。On one’s way (to…):在(去…… His soul's on its way to heaven.
The small ship, Elkor, which had been searching the Barents Sea for weeks, was on its way home.
It had been raining and the street was still wet. She had been studying for one hour when her classmate came to visit her.

What they had in fact found was a ship which had been sunk many years before.:①What they had in fact found:what是关系代词,引导名词性从句,作主语;②which had been sunk many years before:which是关系代词,引导定语从句,修饰先行词ship;③sink动作在was之前发生,因此用过去完成时。
