Good morning friends!
"In the time it took me to outline this article I checked Twitter three times and my email twice. I responded to four emails. I checked Slack once and sent text messages to two people. I went down a rabbit hole of YouTube videos once, costing me about 30 minutes of productivity, and I probably checked my books’ ranks on Amazon roughly 3,172 times."
The above is a quote from the article "The Attention Diet". The author Mark Manson is one of my favorites young writers. His work includes 《Everything is F^cked: A Book About Hope》.
With the current technologies, we all live in the world with so many distractions. It has become a big problem for many of us, myself included. I often found myself doing similar things as the author had written above. The problem is, you are fully aware of it but you can hardly control your attention.
The author compared the current internet browsing, online gaming or social media addictions to the obesities of the 70s' and 80s'. Then people realized it and jumped on the diet and fitness movements. He suggests that we all need the attention diet to improve our focus and working productivities.
The article listed steps to improve focus and productivity:
Step 1. Clean up your social media accounts. Delete unnecessary connections and followings.
Step 2. Choose a good source of information for daily news. Interestingly, his recommendation was Wikimedia because the headline news on it is very brief and usually without any bias opinion.
Step 3. Schedule your distractions. Similar to the regular allowances on your diet program, you would give yourself a break with time for entertainment.
Step 4. Implementation. To help us limit ourselves to using the internet, the article introduced some web blocker apps. Even electrical timers were recommended to turn off your home wifi router on a schedule.
Anyway, trying to be productive can sometimes be hard and boring. But at least this has got my attention. I will try to restrict my internet browsing and, at least check on my WeChat account as less as possible from now on!
Have a great week! Cheers!
