《高榜山之行》

      是日，农历五月五日，端午佳节，吾携吾友游玩挂榜阁。搭车一时至红花湖东门口。途经永福寺，烧香拜佛之地。数人至此祈求来年平安健康。见此庙堂，闻此熏香，感其诚意，吾二人敬畏之心生之。

      至此，吾等继续前行。行至一刻钟，乃至高榜山山底。山环树绕，曲径通幽，伴蝉声阵阵，步入石梯。始吾二人喘息不止，汗流浃背，于半途停歇。路遇一男童，与父母一同攀登，无累觉，活泼可爱至极。看至此，吾二人便继续爬行。前行五百余米，遂至挂榜阁阁底。抬头仰望，只见挂榜阁阁高七层，高耸入云际。此阁，似明清派建筑也，于高榜山之顶，取名于金榜题名，有台基两层，阁楼五层也。

      挂榜阁旁，一硕大红树映入眼帘。树下一石曰之为状元树。只见树上挂满心愿结，皆为考生所写。二人于石凳停歇，饮水解渴。有幸遇一考生掷心愿结于树上，只见其面色欢愁交替。吾诚心祝愿其考试顺利，金榜提名。停歇至此，吾等继续攀爬其余楼层，以欣赏美物美景。一孔子雕像立于一楼阁内大厅正中，四周悬挂诸多文章作品。登至三四五六层，其中皆为大师所作之书画、诗作及根雕作品。吾静立于前，静心欣赏，感悟大师心境。画作之花树鸟群，生动逼真。诗作多为大师所做，诸如东坡居士，李白仙人及不知名者，无不颂赞惠州之美。根雕艺术使吾神魂颠倒之，皆因其精致细腻，又显现自然之美，创新之工矣。其为古之树木，现之艺术。奇形怪状如老人远眺，又如智者传慧。

      既而，吾二人离挂榜阁而去，往回行之，途经回峰轩、凭澜轩。此二轩地处高榜山之山腰，皆为高榜山与红花湖之枢纽。轩内有回峰亭，观景平台等岭南园林建筑，皆与周边环境相映成趣。

      因天色暗矣，不宜久留，遂匆匆瞥之而去。返程之时，吾与吾友畅而聊之，时而莞尔一笑，时而仰天大笑，无不快哉！

Visit to Guabang Attic

Last Gragon Boat Festival, I with my friend visited Guabang Attic. We arrived at the East Gate of Red Flower Lake after taking one-hour bus. Walking several minutes, a temple entered the field of our vision. Observing carefully, we got its name. It was called Yongfu Temple, a place for liting incense and praying. Many people came here to lit incense and to pray sincerely for being safe and healthy. What left us in awe was the grand appearance of the temple and the smell of incense and people's sincere belief into the bargain.

  Then we went on our visit. Walking alone the long road for about 10 minutes, we arrived at the bottom of Gaobang Mountain, with surrounding trees and small hills. In front of us was a row of stone ladders. Ascending alone the ladders, we were surrounded by lush and green trees where there was a winding path leading to a secluded spot. While scaling, we heard a sound of cicadas, fair-sounding and ringing. Breathless and sweaty, we stopped and had a rest half way up the ladders where we encountered a little boy, lively and lovely, also climbing the stone ladders with his families without feeling weary. Climbing ahead about 500 meters, we got to the bottom of Guabang Attic. Looking up at the Attic, I saw it was so towering that it seems to enter the clouds. Located on the peak of Gaobang Mountain, taking the meaning from succeeding in examination, Guabang Attic is a building with style being similar to Ming's and Qing's buildings, consisting of 2 layers of platform base and 5 floor of lofts.

  Beside the Guabang Attic, a big lush tree jumped into our sight. Nearby there was a rock reading Zhuangyuan Tree. The tree was festooned with a great number of red wish knots written and thrown by numerous examinees. We broke our visit at a stone bench, drinking water to get rid of our thirsty. We were so lucky to witness an examinee in that year's examination throwing a wish knot to that tree. Her face expressed a mixture of excitement and nervousness. In my heart I hope she would pass with flying colors. After several minutes' resting, we got up and walked toward the Guabang Attic to visit its beauty. There was a statue of Confucius, a model of all ages, in the middle of the hall, surrounded by a lot of writing works hung over the walls. We ascended the staircase to have a visit of other floors. When we were up there, around us were a lot of works done by outstanding masters, such as paintings, poetry and root carvings. I stood in front of them and appreciated these great works to feel the mental states of these masters. The paintings were intensely alive and lifelike, drawing flowers, trees, birds and so on. The poetry, which was written by many great poets such as Su Dongpo, Li Bai and other unacquainted poets, oded the beauty of Huizhou City. The root carvings attached my eyes not only for they were so delicate and vivid, but also for it is a way to discover the natural beauty and to show creativity. These were carved from wood and became a kind of art. The shapes were various. Some look like old men gazing at the distance, others look like philosophers talking to someone.

  Subsequently, we departed from the Guabang Attic and turned back. On the way to the East Gate, we passed by Huifeng Loft and Pinglan Loft. Located at the half way up the mountain and as a hinge between Gaobang Mountain and Red Flower Lake, these lofts consisted of several Lingnan-style garden buildings, such as Huifeng Pavilion, viewing platforms and so on, which were in harmony with the surroundings.

  For it was dark and was not permit to stay long, we just had a quick glance at the scenery. On the way to home, I chatted freely and delightedly with my friend about the visit. Sometimes we smiled slightly; sometimes we threw back our heads to laugh aloud.
