The Norwood Builder——one story of 《The Return of Sherlock Holmes》

An old man,Mr Oldacre told Mr Mcfarlane that he had wrote his will on which he wanted Mcfarlane to have all his money when he was dead.That night,Mcfarlane visited Oldacre and left his stick there. The next day,the police found Oldacre died of fire and believed  Mcfarlane was the murderer because he wanted to get the money as soon as possible.

But Holmes thought it would be very foolish to kill a man on exactly the same day that he had made his will.It would also be silly to kill Oldacre when his servant knew who was in the house.And,it was unbelievable that Mcfarlane was so careless to leave his stick behind in the room if he had killed Oldacre and burn the body so carefully.

So,who was the murderer?

Actually,no one was!Unbelievable?In fact,Oldacre didn't die.He made everyone believe that he was murdered by Mcfarlane in order to put him into prison and escape from his debt.

Why did he do that?

Because many years ago,he asked Mcfarlane's mother to marry him but she refused.So he wanted to put her son into prison and made she unhappy.So nasty and evil,right？
