How do you send a message to someone, nowadays? Email or Wechat? I knew it! During the period of the Great War, there was no form of electronic mail. So to help communicate, detect gases and rescue soldiers, animals were used. From dogs and cats to different types of birds, all countries used the enhanced abilities of animals to give them a step ahead in the game.

An example of animals being used to save lives is taken place on the 3rd of October 1918, during one of the last wars in World War I. The Battle of Argonne. Five-Hundred US soldiers are down in their trenches, hurt and bloody all over. This group of soldiers was called the Lost Battalion. As well as wounded soldiers and no food, they were surrounded by the last of the German soldiers. The Germans had no clue that their enemy was hurt and right behind them, in a trench, with no ammunition and food.

On the other side of the battlefield, the US soldiers were firing artillery shells and trying to take out the Germans. Without any knowledge that the Lost Battalion was right behind the Germans, they continued to fire. The Lost Battalion were getting killed off by their own allies! The Germans were not getting hit, but their own allies were!
By the second day, only less than 500 of the soldiers were left. They sent two pigeons to their allies, telling them that they were there. Both got killed by German snipers. Their last hope of contacting their allies was the last pigeon, called, Cher Ami (French for ‘Dear Friend”). They wrote a message stating their coordinates and to stop firing the bombs.
They sent off the bird and hoped to God that she would make it. Cher Ami flew fast and high. The German sniper saw her and shot her down. She gained balance and continued on, strong and bravely. Another one of the Germans saw her. He sent out his eagle and also tried to snipe down the bird. BANG! Cher Ami’s Breast was shot and flesh came ripping out. Both her legs got shot and only one tendon was hanging to carry the message. Only an eye socket left for Cher Ami’s left eye. Still, she flew on and eventually reached the US base.

The US force got the message and stopped firing and sent a rescue team to their whereabouts. The Lost Battalion got rescued and 194 lives were saved. Cher Ami continued to be respected until 1919 when she sadly passed away.
She won the Croix de Guerre medal, which commemorates individuals who risk their lives and perform demonstrations of valour, including the battle with enemy forces. Today she is displayed in the Smithsonian Institution, standing proudly with her wooden leg.
