一、词汇

1. Bad luck comes in threes for the Chinese internet giant Tencent.

in threes: in groups of three people or things三个一组,比如做游戏分组就可以用上:

Teachers taking part will be asked to work in threes.参加的老师将被要求分成三人一组进行活动。

此处处理为 “接二连三”;

2. Backlog 积压待办的事务

例:

There is a backlog of repairs and maintenance in schools.

学校里有积压下来等待处理的维修和养护工作。

3. at odds 争执(不一致)

China and South Korea have been at odds since Seoul decided to press ahead with a US missile defence shield system in early 2017.

press ahead with 推进

4. leery ['lɪərɪ] 警觉的

Tencent has been far more leery of loading up ads than US peers such as Facebook or Google

5. scotched 结束; 制止

If you scotch a rumour, plan, or idea, you put an end to it before it can develop any further.

例:

They have scotched rumours that they are planning a special show.

他们辟谣说他们并没有在筹划一场特别的演出。

6. paucity ['pɔːsɪtɪ] 短缺 [正式]

If you say that there is a paucity of something, you mean that there is not enough of it. 

例:

Even the film's impressive finale can't hide the first hour's paucity of imagination.

这部电影在开头一个小时中毫无想象力,即使有个让人印象深刻的结局也无法掩盖这个缺憾。

例:

...the paucity of good women sprinters.

...优秀女子短跑选手的匮乏。

7. ratchet up 稳步提高; 使...稳步提高

If something ratchets up or is ratcheted up, it increases by a fixed amount or degree, and seems unlikely to decrease again.
