最后一个故事。六个拿破仑雕像。
第一个地点，依然是贝克街。苏格兰场的警官Lestrade常常来拜访福尔摩斯，当然福尔摩斯也很高兴，因为他很想知道警察局总部有什么事情在发生；而警官也很欢迎福尔摩斯能提供任何帮助。
这天，当福尔摩斯问起有什么有趣的案子的时候，Lestrade说倒是有桩案子，但可能跟华生医生更有关系。因为犯人大约是个疯子。不然怎么解释他闯进别人家里却什么也不偷，只是把拿破仑石像给摔得粉粉碎呢。。。
但福尔摩斯忽然坐正了身子说这还挺有趣的，让他继续讲。
于是，Lestrade讲了第一桩案子。
"It all started four days ago," Lestrade began. "The first report came from a man named Morse Hudson. Mr. Hudson owns a small shop in the Kennington Road district where he sells paintings and small statues. It seems he and his assistant were in the back of the shop when they heard a loud crash. They rushed to the front of the shop to see what had happened and found a small plaster statue of Napoleon on the floor. It was smashed to pieces. But there was no one in the shop."
这第一桩案子发生在Mr.Hudson的小店里，没有人受伤，那石膏像也值不了多少钱。所以基本也没什么实质性伤害。
第二桩案子，与一位医生有关，Dr. Barnicot, 他就住在Mr. Hudson的小店不远，曾经从他店里买过两个拿破仑的雕像。一个放在家里，一个放在办公室。
”Well, this morning, someone broke into Dr. Barnicot's house. Strangely, nothing was stolen except the bust of Napoleon. It had been taken into the yard and smashed.
"This afternoon, Dr. Barnicot discovered that someone had broken into his office and destroyed his other Napoleon."
福尔摩斯听完，立即有了结论：这个人不是因为恨拿破仑才这么干的。毕竟，伦敦拿破仑的形象成千上万。他是在找一模一样的拿破仑石像。
“Then the man you are after is not driven by a hatred of Napoleon, " said Holmes. "After all, there are thousands of images of the French Emperor in London. This man seems to be after identical Napoleons."
而且，他说那个人根本不是什么疯子。因为医生家里的石像是被拿到院子里去打碎的，这样就不会惊动医生家里的人。而医生办公室的石像却是在室内打碎的，因为他知道办公室没有人所以不会惊扰任何人。一个疯子怎么可能会想到这些呢？
"But I find it interesting, " interrupted Holmes, " that the man took Dr. Barnicot's Napoleon outside. Would a madman think to break the bust outside where it would not disturb the family? Then, in the doctor's office, he broke it inside because he knew no one was around to be disturbed. No, we are not dealing with madness, gentlemen."
福尔摩斯很严肃地说，有些事件可能看起来无害又不值一提，但你很难说它是不重要的。nothing is without meaning. 没有什么是完全没有意义的。
他说，如果案子有任何进展，希望警官能随时告知。
