The next morning, at Jo’s suggestion, I walked on Jiayuguan’s wide, relatively empty boulevards to a local restaurant, Wu Mai Er, to try a regional specialty: Lanzhou hand-pulled beef noodles. When I couldn’t communicate my order, a man in line bought my bowl for me and showed me how to pick it up, put chili sauce, or lajiao, in it, and then sit at a counter to slurp the noodles from the steaming broth.

1.at sb’s suggestion：根据某人的建议，可与on sb‘s advice这个词组作同义替换；
e.g.You would not have made such a mistake if you had acted on his advice.
如果你按照他的建议去做，你就不会犯这种错误。
2.boulevard [ˈbʊləvɑ:rd]：n. 1）林荫大道;A boulevard is a wide street in a city, usually with trees along each side.
e.g.The old town centre is girdled by a boulevard lined with trees.

2）（常用作街道名称）要道，大街 ；
a wide main road (often used in the name of streets)
e.g.Sunset Boulevard日落大道
3.specialty：n. 1）这个词的本义是专业、专长；
e.g.His specialty is international law.
他的专业是国际法。(《柯林斯高阶英汉双解学习词典》)
在这个意思上,specialty可与major(vi) in，major（n.）作同义替换；
比如,以后大家在写英文简历或进行自我介绍时,就可以用这几种表达方式来介绍自己所学专业,比如:
I majored in computer science.
I’m a computer major.
My speciality is computer science.
2）specialty有一个熟词僻义，即(某个地方的)特色食品，特产； A specialty of a particular place is a special food or product that is always very good there.
e.g.regional specialties地方特产
specialty stores特产商店
seafood, paella, empanadas and other specialties.
海鲜、西班牙肉菜饭、南美肉馅卷饼和其他特色食品
这个词有个近义词gourmet adj.gourmet food (= of high quality and often expensive)美味佳肴，美食。
那么，我们在表达地方特色食品，特产时也可以这样说local gourmet food;
4. Lanzhou hand-pulled beef noodles：兰州拉面
这里我们谈谈中国菜的英文表达。大家都知道，我们中国有八大菜系、菜品丰富、更有煎，炒，烹，炸，煮，熬，炖，溜，烧，汆等花式做法。
而菜名也往往别具一格，富含地方特色，兼具中华文化底蕴，因此，中国菜名的翻译一直是个另人头疼的问题。
结合文中兰州拉面的英译，我们可以看出，一般中国菜的翻译要体现几个核心要素，即原料、做法、口味和产地（如果原菜名中有）。
大家以后有机会向老外介绍中国菜或写作介绍中国地方特色时可以利用这一原则。比如这句中的：
兰州拉面Lanzhou hand-pulled beef noodles（产地Lanzhou+做法hand-pulled+原料beef noodles）
再如：
糖醋里脊sweet-and-sour pork（酸甜口味+原料猪肉）
宫保鸡丁spicy diced chicken with peanuts（辣味+做法切丁+原料鸡肉配花生）

1.order：n.常见的意思是秩序、命令，但在本句中，却是一个熟词僻义，即点菜，
所点的饮食菜肴a request for food or drinks in a restaurant, bar etc.; the food or drinks that you ask for，
比如外国人在餐馆点菜时，经常说的May I take your order ? 您现在点菜吗？
又如：
an order for steak and fries点一份牛排炸薯条
2.in line：在这里是排队的意思，one behind another in a line or queue；
e.g.They waited in line for the tickets.
排队的其它同义表达为:in a queue; queue up for, line up for, line up to do；
3. chili sauce：辣椒酱
4.slurp [slɜ:rp]：n./v.啧啧吃的声音，啜食,类似中文里的象声词；
e.g.1)He was slurping his tea.
他正咂着嘴喝茶。（牛津）
2)He takes a slurp from a cup of black coffee.
他咕嘟喝了一口清咖啡。《柯林斯高阶英汉双解学习词典》
5. steaming adj.大家都熟悉其名词形式stream蒸汽、水蒸汽的意思；steaming作为形容词，
1）其基本意思为冒热气的，非常热的；
e.g.The waiter appeared like magic from the kitchen with a steaming hot lunch.
服务员像变幻术似地从厨房里端出一份热气腾腾的午餐。《汉英大词典》
Lucy and I were far away in a steaming hot village walkingthrough narrow streets.
我和Lucy去过一个偏远又炎热的村庄，在狭窄的街道上散步。
2) steaming还有一个引申义，即非常愤怒的very angry，可以想象一下，气得快冒烟了的感觉；
比如，《经济学人》在论及美国加州民主党反对联邦权力的斗争时,这样说道:
California steaming Democrats are learning to invoke states’ rights. America’s most progressive state is set to lead the new fight against federal power.
愤怒的加州民主党人正在学习援引各州的权利。美国这一最进步的州将发起反对联邦权力的新斗争。
6. broth 美 [brɔ:θ]（通常加入蔬菜或米的）肉汤，汤；
相关习语：too many cooks spoil the broth.
比喻人多手杂反坏事；人多添乱 ；
