Summary
In the author's generation when China was emerging from isolationism and poverty, we looked up to the US by learning their democracy,market economics, equality and other ideals.
However,after watching America's wars oversea, reckless economic policies , destructive partisanship, the disgraceful assault culminated last year, we barely make out that shinning beacon anymore.
Moreover, in 2008, the US subprime lending fiasco touched off the global financial crisis, which made our idolizing of America began to wane.
A vivid example is that nowadays when our students want to study at the US, they feel acutely fearful of American gun violence, anti-Asian attacks and being labeled a spy. They get ominous advice such as don't stray from computer.
We didn't mean to gloat over American's trouble but we are not going to follow it over the cliff.
