                                                         Mutilated ladies*

Has it ever happened to you? Have you ever put your trousers in the washing machine and then remembered there was a large bank note in your back pocket? When you rescued your trousers, did note in your back pocket? When you rescued your trousers, did you find the note was whiter than white? People who live in Britain needn't despair when they make mistakes like this (and a lot of people do)! Fortunately for them, the Bank of England has a team called Mutilated Ladies which deals with claims from people who fed their money to a machine or to their dog. Dogs, it seems, love to chew up money!

A recent case concerns Jane Butlin whose fiancé, John, runs a successful furniture business. John had very good day and put his wallet containing £3,000 into the microwave oven for safekeeping. Then he and Jane went horse-riding. When they got home, Jane cooked their dinner in the microwave oven and without realizing it, cooked her fiancé's wallet as well. Imagine their dismay when they found a beautifully-cooked wallet and notes turned to ash! John went to see his bank manager who sent the remains of wallet and the money to the special department of the Bank of England in Newcastle: the Mutilate Ladies! They examined the remains and John got all his money back. 'So long as there's something to identify, we will give people their money back,' said a spokeswoman for the Bank. 'Last year, we paid £1.5m on 21,000 claims.

*Damaged bank notes. The Queen's head appears on English bank notes, and 'lady' refers to this.

Has it ever happened to you? Have you ever put your trousers in the washing machine and then remembered there was a large bank note in your back pocket? When yourescued your trousers, did note in your back pocket? When you rescued your trousers, did you find the note was whiter than white? People who live in Britain needn'tdespair when they make mistakes like this (and a lot of people do)! Fortunately for them, the Bank of England has a team called Mutilated Ladies which deals with claims from people who fed their money to a machine or to their dog. Dogs, it seems, love tochew up money!

1 ever: a word meaning at any time; used mostly in questions, negatives, comparisons, or sentences with ‘if’〔一般用于疑问句、否定句、比较结构或带 if 的句子中〕在任何时候;常用来表示某种强调,反义词为never(从未)。如:Have you ever been to Beijing?*ever有时用于疑问句或假定句中表示愤怒或惊讶,如:Has anyone of you ever heard such nonsense?

2【小词活用】put:①放,安置:put the books on the table;(本文用法) ②穿上:put on my coat; ③put up with容忍,忍受:I can’t put up with her.

3 remember:区分remember doing sth./remember to do sth. ①If you remember doing something , you have a picture in your mind of the time when you did it.指记得以前做过某事; ②If you remember to do something , you do not forget to do what you had intended. 如:remember to post the letter.

    4 a large bank note:

5 rescue /'reskjuː/: to save someone or something from a situation of danger or harm营救,解救,救援。

    6 whiter than white:

7 People who live in Britain needn't despair when…:其中need的用法注意两点:①need’t 为must的否定式,“不必”,如:Must I finish it taday? They had a holiday yesterday, and Jane needn’t have gone to school.

Fortunately for them, the Bank of England has a team called Mutilated Ladies which deals with claims from people who fed their money to a machine or to their dog.全句连续使用3个较长定语:…called Mutilated Ladies:分词短语作定语,修饰team;which引导的从句修饰Mutilated Ladies;who引导的的从句修饰people。

9 Dogs, it seems, love to chew up money!

10 chew /tʃuː/: to bite food several times before swallowing it咀嚼;嚼碎;常用短语chew up

A recent case concerns Jane Butlin whose fiancé, John, runs a successful furniture business. John had very good day and put his wallet containing £3,000 into themicrowave oven for safekeeping. Then he and Jane went horse-riding. When they got home, Jane cooked their dinner in the microwave oven and without realizing it, cooked her fiancé's wallet as well. Imagine their dismay when they found a beautifully-cookedwallet and notes turned to ash! John went to see his bank manager who sent the remains of wallet and the money to the special department of the Bank of England inNewcastle: the Mutilate Ladies! They examined the remains and John got all his money back. 'So long as there's something to identify, we will give people their money back,' said a spokeswoman for the Bank. 'Last year, we paid £1.5m on 21,000 claims.

1 【熟词僻义】concern/kən'sɜːn/: V-T If a situation, event, or activity concerns you, it affects or involves you.

2 fiancé/fi'ɒnseɪ/: the man whom a woman is going to marry未婚夫;对应的未婚妻:fiancée

    3【小词活用】run: ①跑:run a long way; ②经营、管理:run a small shop; (本文用法)③竞选:run for Governor of New York.

4 microwave /'maɪkrə(ʊ)weɪv/: a type of oven that cooks food very quickly using very short electric waves instead of heat(also 又作‚microwave 'oven)微波炉

5 oven /ˈʌvn/ : An oven is a device for cooking that is like a box with a door. You heat it and cook food inside it.

6 safekeeping /,seɪf 'kiːpɪŋ/: the state of being kept safe, or the action of keeping something safe

    7 went horse-riding:类比go shopping。go+动名词:  go cycling/riding/hunting/skating等(骑车/骑马/打猎/滑冰)

    8 …without realizing it,…without介词短语在句中作原因状语,表示“由于没有意识到它”

9:dismay /dɪs'meɪ/: the worry, disappoint-ment, or unhappiness you feel when something unpleasant happens

11 ..they found a beautifully-cooked wallet and notes turned to ash!本句中turned to ash过去分词短语作notes的补足语,可以改写成..they found a beautifully-cooked wallet and notes had been turned to ash!

    12 Newcastle:

13 So long as…:表条件,“只要”:I shall lend you this book as long as you keep it well.

14 Identify /aɪ'dentɪfaɪ/ : to recognize something or discover exactly what it is, what its nature or origin is etc

15 spokeswoman /'spokswʊmən/ : a woman who has been chosen to speak officially for a group, organization, or government

①常用连词although、even though、while、no matter how… Although it is raining, the girls are dancing gracefully. However far it is, I intend to drive there tonight.不管有多远,我今晚也要开车到那儿去;③-ever的符合词=no matter一样引导的让步状语从句,如:whatever I say, I seem to say wrong thin.(=no matter what…)

John Bultin runs a successful furniture business and after a very good day, he put his wallet containing £3,000 into the microwave oven for safekeeping. Then he and his fiancé, Jan, went horse-riding, after which Jane cooked their dinner in the microwave over only to find to their dismay that the money had been destroyed. John went to see his bank manager who sent the remains to the Mutilated Ladies department who identified the remains and returned the money.
