For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.

    The Prophet--On Children

And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said,

    Speak to us of Children.

    And he said:

Your children are not your children.

They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you,

    他们籍你而来,但非因你而来;

And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,

For they have their own thoughts.

    因为他们有他们自己的思想;

You may house their bodies but not their souls,

For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,

which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them,

but seek not to make them like you.

For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.

The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,

and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.

    引弓,满力,箭疾驰远去。

    Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;

    在箭者的手中,你欣然弯曲。

For even as He loves the arrow that flies,

so He loves also the bow that is stable.

The Prophet is a book of 26 prose poetry fables written in English by the Lebanese-American artist, philosopher and writer Kahlil Gibran. It was originally published in 1923 by Alfred A. Knopf. It is Gibran's best known work. The Prophet has been translated into over 40 different languages and has never been out of print.

The Prophet, Almustafa, has lived in the foreign city of Orphalese for 12 years and is about to board a ship which will carry him home. He is stopped by a group of people, with whom he discusses topics such as life and the human condition.

    书中的先知Almustafa(阿尔穆斯塔法 ,意即“上天所眷爱的”),在国外的一个叫Orphalese(奥法里斯)城已经生活了12年,他准备坐船返回家乡。

The book is divided into chapters dealing with love, marriage, children, giving, eating and drinking, work, joy and sorrow, houses, clothes, buying and selling, crime and punishment, laws, freedom, reason and passion, pain, self-knowledge, teaching, friendship, talking, time, good and evil, prayer, pleasure, beauty, religion, and death

    Tips of Pic.
