In this chapter, Lewis further explores the concept of theTrinity. He illustrates this by using the positions of two books lying on a table, one on top of the other, and the relationship between the imagining mind and the picture to explain that the source, cause, or origin does not necessarily come first. Thus, in Christianity, the Father is not there before the Son. He argues that in Christianity, God is not a static thing—nor even a person—but a dynamic, pulsating activity, similar to a dance.

I appreciate how vividly C.S. Lewis illustrates and explains the complex concept of the Trinity. In Chapter 2, he uses a cube with six squares to show how God could be three persons yet still one; in this chapter,he further clarifies that the Father and the Son were present at the beginning, with neither preceding the other.

At the end of this chapter, Lewis emphasizes the importanceof correctly understanding this concept—because joining the dance with the Three is the only way we can transform from “being made” to sharing in the life of “being begotten.” “Every Christian is to become a little Christ.”
