辅音前用a,元音前用an, 但特例如 A European, a university, 虽然单词是元音字母开头，但发音是辅音，因此还是用a; 同理，an honor, an hour，虽然单词是辅音字母开头，但发音是元音，因此用an.
This is Mr. Brown, a member of the trade union committee.
不定冠词与一个名词一起使用时，还可以表示一类事物：
A rose is a flower.玫瑰是一种花。

I’m going to buy some medicine.我去买药
定冠词也能和一单数名词一起，表示一类人
The lion is found in Africa.

和形容词连用表示一类人
Fortune favours the brave.
The还和独一无二的名词一起使用，如The sky was blue and cloudless.
